How many people can you follow on Instagram?

The number is published and it is the same for every account. What is not published is how fast you may follow, which is where most of the bad advice comes from.

Short answer

You can follow up to 7,500 accounts on Instagram. Instagram set the limit to reduce spam, and anyone who tries to follow more sees an error message, however many followers they have. Accounts already following more than 7,500 did so before the limit was introduced. Instagram publishes no daily follow limit.

The Instagram following limit is 7,500

Instagram does not allow anyone to follow more than 7,500 people, and it says why in one line: the limit is there to help reduce spam. It applies to every account the same way, personal or business, new or old, large or small.

QuestionWhat the Help Center says
How many accounts can I follow?Up to 7,500.
Does a big account get a higher limit? No. The error appears regardless of how many followers you have.
Why do some accounts follow more? They followed more than 7,500 before the limit was introduced.
Is there a daily limit?None is published on the pages read for this guide.
Is there a limit on followers?None is published on the pages read for this guide.

What happens when you reach the limit

At 7,500, a new follow does not go through and Instagram shows an error message instead. The Help Center describes no other consequence: the accounts you already follow stay followed, and the limit is on whom you follow, not on who follows you.

The only way to follow someone new is to unfollow someone first. If you are close to the limit and following accounts for a reason, such as a shop keeping track of stockists and suppliers, know the limit before you get there, because once there every new follow costs an old one.

Making room: how to unfollow

  1. Go to the profile of the account you want to unfollow.
  2. Tap Following at the top.
  3. Tap Unfollow to confirm.

If what you want is distance from someone who follows you, rather than room under the limit, there are other tools: a private account can remove followers, and blocking hides your photos, videos and account from them without notifying them. Both are set out in how to hide your followers list on Instagram.

Is there a daily follow limit on Instagram?

Instagram does not publish one. The pages read for this guide give the 7,500 total and nothing per day or per hour, and no Help Center page was found for the message people report seeing when they follow too quickly.

Numbers for a daily limit circulate widely, some with a precise figure attached. None of them could be traced to Instagram, so none is repeated here. What Instagram does publish points the same way: automated follows from outside apps break its Community Guidelines, and that activity is removed when it is found.

So follow at the pace of a person reading profiles, not of a tool working a list. If Instagram stops you from following for a while, wait, and do not install an app that promises to get around it.

Why your following and follower counts change by themselves

Two documented reasons explain most sudden changes:

  • Inauthentic activity removed. Apps outside Instagram create automated likes, comments and follows to make accounts look more popular. When those accounts are found, their activity is taken off Instagram, and the follows they made disappear from your numbers.
  • Disabled accounts removed. Instagram routinely removes disabled accounts, so the number of followers you have and the number of accounts you follow can both change, even within a short time.

A drop of this kind is not something you did, and it is not a penalty. It is the count catching up with which accounts are real. It is also the reason never to buy followers or views: follows and likes generated by outside apps are exactly what this cleanup removes. Real reach is measured differently, as how Reels views are counted explains.

How many followers can you have?

No limit on followers appears in the pages read for this guide. The 7,500 cap is on how many accounts you follow, not on how many follow you.

Following many accounts, and what you actually see

Following 7,500 accounts does not mean seeing 7,500 accounts' posts. The feed orders posts by signals such as your activity and your history with each account, and posts from accounts you rarely interact with tend to sink. Two settings help when you follow a lot:

  • Favorites. Mark up to 50 accounts as favorites and they move up the feed, with a separate view that shows only them, newest first.
  • Unfollow what you no longer read. It frees room under the limit and makes the feed reflect what you care about now.

How the feed decides the order is in what Instagram feed means.

For a business account

The limit is the same for a business, and few businesses come near it. The more useful questions are who to follow and why:

  • Follow with a purpose: customers who tag you, stockists, suppliers, neighbors, and accounts in your field you want to learn from.
  • Do not follow to be followed back. Automated follows from apps outside Instagram go against its Community Guidelines, and they are removed when found.
  • Read the right numbers. Following counts matter far less than what your posts do; what accounts reached means covers the ones worth tracking.

If your follower count has dropped and you are not sure why, the free social media audit looks at the account as it is and what is actually moving.

How we will test this

Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.

This is the test we will run: we follow accounts from a test account in steady batches up to the limit, record where the error appears and its exact wording, and check how unfollowing restores the ability to follow.

Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next

How many people can you follow on Instagram?

Up to 7,500 accounts. Instagram set the limit to reduce spam.

What is the Instagram following limit?

Why can some accounts follow more than 7,500?

They followed more than 7,500 people before the limit was introduced.

Is there a daily follow limit on Instagram?

Instagram does not publish one. Figures that circulate could not be traced to Instagram, so the safe pace is that of a person reading profiles.

What happens when I reach 7,500?

An error message appears and the follow does not go through. You keep everyone you follow, and to follow someone new you have to unfollow someone first.

Does a verified or business account get a higher limit?

No. The limit applies regardless of how many followers an account has, and the Help Center describes no exception.

Is there a limit on how many followers I can have?

No follower limit appears on the Help Center pages read for this guide. The 7,500 cap is on accounts you follow.

Why did my following count go down by itself?

Instagram removes inauthentic activity and routinely removes disabled accounts, so both your followers and the accounts you follow can change, even within a short time.

Does blocking someone notify them?

No. The Help Center says the person you block is not notified, and blocking hides your account from them in search.

Can an app help me follow more people faster?

No. Automated follows from outside apps break Instagram's Community Guidelines, and that activity is removed when it is found.
