How to search effects on Instagram.

The main search bar does not find them. Effects live inside the camera, and the ones made by independent creators are one swipe further than most people go.

Short answer

Open the camera, not the search bar. For a story, swipe left along the bottom through the effects, and swipe all the way to More effects for the ones independent creators make. For a Reel, tap Effects and scroll the tray.

Finding effects for a story

The search bar is the wrong place to look. It finds accounts, posts, sounds and hashtags; effects are chosen in the camera.

  1. Tap Create and select Story, or swipe right from anywhere in Feed.
  2. Scroll to Story at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Swipe left along the bottom and select an effect.
  4. For effects made by independent creators, swipe all the way to the left and tap More effects.
  5. Tap to take a photo, or tap and hold to record a video.

One documented behavior catches people out: with the front or the back camera, the effect you choose appears automatically on the closest person's face, which is not always the person you meant.

Finding effects for a reel

Reels have their own route, and it is shorter:

  1. Tap Create and select Reel, or swipe right from anywhere in Feed.
  2. Scroll to Reels at the bottom.
  3. Tap Effects, scroll through them, and select one.
  4. Tap the camera view and record.

Because the effect is applied while you record, it belongs to that take. On a Reel an effect is a filming decision rather than something you add in the edit, so choose it before you start. The rest of the Reel flow is in how to post on Instagram.

The tray in the camera holds a small set. Everything else sits behind More effects, at the far left of the story tray, and that is where the effects people ask about are: the ones made by independent creators rather than by Instagram. It is also where a brand looking for something specific should start, because the built in tray is mostly color and face filters.

When you browse, look for the result you want to see, a grain, a glow, a frame, rather than a mood, and save the ones you like so they sit in your own tray the next time. A brand that wants a look nobody else has can also have an effect made; Instagram publishes material on creating them.

Getting an effect you saw on someone else's story

This is the question behind most searches, and it has a simpler answer than searching. A story made with a creator effect shows the effect's name near the top. Tap the name, and the effect opens so you can try it straight away or save it to your tray.

This beats searching because effect names are not unique: many effects share the same name, and only one of them is the one you saw.

Face and hand effects, and the setting behind them

Face and hand effects have their own setting, which you can turn on or off in the app at any time. Instagram's privacy notice for it explains why it exists: an effect such as a filter, an avatar or a mask has to be placed correctly on your face or hands in the camera, photos and videos.

If effects that follow a face have stopped working, that setting is the first place to look, before reinstalling anything. After that, clearing the app's temporary files is the next step, set out in how to clear cache on Instagram.

Choosing effects when you are posting as a business

Most effects are made for personal use, and a brand using them carelessly looks like it borrowed someone's phone. A simple way to decide:

UseWorks for a brandWhy
Color and lightYes.It makes a set of posts look like one account.
Text and frame effectsYes.They carry a promotion or a question without a design tool.
Face filtersSometimes.Fine for the person behind the brand, wrong for the product.
Trend effectsRarely. They date a post the moment the trend passes.
A custom effectIf you have the budget. An effect other people use puts your brand in their stories.

The test is whether the effect helps the viewer understand something. If it only shows that you know the app, skip it. For stories without any effect at all, a colored background and text do a lot of the same work, as changing the background color of a story shows.

When effects will not appear

What you seeLikely reasonWhat to do
No effects tray at allYou are on the wrong camera mode.Check that Story or Reels is selected at the bottom.
Only a handful of effectsYou have not opened the creator gallery.Swipe all the way left and tap More effects.
The effect does not follow a faceThe face and hand effects setting is off.Turn it back on in the app settings.
An effect you used before is goneCreator effects can be removed by their maker.Check the creator's profile, and save effects you rely on.
Effects are missing after an updateAvailability differs by app version and region.Update the app, then check on a second device before concluding it is gone.
You cannot find one by nameNames repeat across many effects.Open a story that used it and tap the effect name instead.

Building effects into a routine instead of hunting for them

  1. Pick three and use them for a month. Recognition comes from repetition.
  2. Save them when you find them, rather than searching again on the day.
  3. Follow two or three effect creators whose work matches your look.
  4. Keep the product unfiltered. Colors that do not match the real thing lead to returns.
  5. Check on a second device before building a campaign on an effect, because availability differs.

A small, consistent set of effects is one of the ideas in Instagram story ideas, and a story only lasts a day unless you keep it, as how long Instagram stories last explains. Choosing that set is part of how we run Instagram management, and the free social media audit looks at whether your stories are recognizable at a glance.

How we will test this

Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.

This is the test we will run: we open the story and reels cameras on iPhone and Android test accounts, record what the trays hold, whether the effects gallery can be searched, how an effect is opened and saved from someone else's story, and what happens when the face and hand effects setting is turned off.

Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.
