Opening the photo editor
- Tap the Add post + button at the bottom of the app.
- Take a photo, or tap Upload to use one from your phone.
- If you took the photo, tap Edit on the side panel. If you uploaded it, tap Next first, then Edit.
From the editing screen you have the same tools as for video:
- Sound: tap Sound, then Add sound, or Replace if there is one. Sound effects are under the same button, and Voice adds a voiceover or a voice effect.
- Text: tap Text, type, and drag the bar under the track to set when it appears and for how long. Copy duplicates it.
- Overlay: layer another photo or video over yours, then pinch to resize and drag to place it.
- Effects: video effects and AI editing effects sit in the same editor.
For a single photo with a filter, a sound and some text, the quicker photo post screen may be enough; the steps are in how to post on TikTok.
Editing several photos into one post
Tap Add + on the editing screen to bring in more photos or videos, up to 35 items in one editing session. Then treat each photo as a clip:
- Reorder: press and hold a clip and drag it.
- Timing: drag the arrows on either side of a clip to show a photo for longer or shorter.
- Zoom: pinch in or out on the clip.
- Transitions: tap the transition button between two clips, choose one, and tap Apply to all if you want the same everywhere.
This produces a video made from photos. If you would rather people swipe through the photos at their own pace, post them as a photo post instead; the difference is set out in how to make a slideshow on TikTok.
Using an effect template
Templates are the TikTok photo edits people copy: a set structure of timing, effects and music into which you drop your own pictures.
- Tap the Add post + button, then Create at the bottom.
- Select a template, or search for one.
- Tap Try this template.
- Choose the photos or videos to fill it, and follow the steps.
Two catches. Effect templates are not available to everyone yet. And on a Business Account you can only use templates built with music licensed for commercial use, which can rule out popular ones; popular TikTok songs explains the Commercial Music Library.
The Magic tool
Magic applies an editing style automatically, adding video and audio effects in one tap. From the editing screen, tap Magic, choose a style, tap it again to replay, and tap Continue to keep it. It is a fast way to try a look; check the result before you post, because the style decides the pace and sound for you.
AI Create and AI Alive
TikTok has two AI tools that work from photos. Neither is available everywhere.
| Tool | What it does | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| AI Create | Generates an image or a video from a text prompt and, for video, a photo of yours. | Editing screen, AI Create, then AI Image or AI Video. |
| AI Alive | Turns one of your pictures into a short video from a prompt, for your Story. | Tap your profile photo, add a photo, then AI Alive on the side panel. |
AI Create gives a limited number of regenerations each day, keeps your prompts and uploads for up to 30 days, and asks you not to use photos of other people without their consent. You can leave the screen while it works by tapping Generate as draft. An AI Alive video takes about a minute, and its drafts expire after 7 days.
When an edited photo needs an AI label
TikTok requires a label on AI generated content that contains realistic images, audio or video, and asks creators to label anything completely generated or significantly edited by AI, such as a person shown doing or saying something they did not, or a face swap. Small corrections and enhancements do not count.
If you used only TikTok's own AI effects, TikTok labels the post automatically, and that label cannot be removed. Otherwise, turn it on yourself: for a photo, tap Post settings and switch on the AI-generated content setting; for a video, tap Next, then More options. TikTok says the label does not affect distribution as long as the post follows the Community Guidelines.
Limits to know
- Up to 35 photos and videos in one editing session.
- Up to 8 overlay items.
- One sound per post, although sound effects and a voiceover can be added on top.
- Speed changes work on video clips only, not on photos.
- Your phone's own camera cannot be used inside TikTok; take the photo with it first, then upload.
For a business account
For a shop or a brand, photos are the cheapest content you have: product shots, behind the scenes, a finished job. The editor turns them into posts without a video shoot. Three habits help:
- Put the words on the photo, with Text, so the post makes sense with the sound off.
- Check the music before you build, because a template with unlicensed music will not be available to a business account.
- Label AI edits honestly, especially on product photos, where an edited result is a claim about the product.
If you want the posting handled for you, the TikTok marketing service covers it.
How we will test this
Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.
This is the test we will run: we edit the same set of product photos on a test account with the editor, an effect template, Magic and AI Create, on iPhone and Android, and record which options appear, how each result looks, and which posts receive an automatic AI label.
Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.
