What a channel is on Instagram
A channel is a messaging space in your inbox where one account broadcasts to many. The creator shares messages, which Instagram describes as things like announcements, behind the scenes content, event details and upcoming collaborations. Members can read them, react, reply, and vote in polls, but they cannot post messages themselves.
Channels are slowly being released and are not available to every account yet. Instagram can also run a live video inside a channel, for the members already there.
A channel is not a group chat
| Feature | Channel | Group chat |
|---|---|---|
| Who can post messages | The admin, plus any collaborators. | Everyone in the chat. |
| Who can find it | Anyone on Instagram; it is discoverable. | Only people added to it. |
| What members do | Read, react, reply and vote. | Talk to each other. |
| Who runs it | An admin who can moderate or end it. | The members. |
If you want a private conversation with a few people, you want a group chat, which how to DM in Instagram covers. A channel is for when one account has something to say to a lot of people at once; the wider idea of direct messages is in what DM means in social media.
How to join a channel
When a creator you follow starts a channel and sends the first message, you get a notification. Tap it to open the channel, look at who has already joined at the bottom, and tap Join. The channel is then added to your inbox. You can also join through an invite link, a QR code, or by tapping a channel message someone shared to their story.
Joining is an app feature, available on Android, iPhone and iPad. Before you join, know one thing: your reactions, replies and poll votes in a channel are visible to anyone on Instagram, and other people may be able to see that you are a member.
How to start a channel
You need a public account with more than 1,000 followers, and the feature has to have reached your account. Then:
- Tap Messages at the bottom.
- Tap Compose in the top right.
- Tap Create channel.
- Enter a name, choose the audience, choose when the channel ends, and decide whether to show it on your profile.
- Tap Create.
Your channels are listed under Messages, then Channels at the top. If you share branded content in a channel, you have to use the paid partnership tool to show the commercial relationship, as on any other post.
Inviting people to your channel
The first message you send notifies all your followers and invites them to join. After that, you can bring people in with:
- An invite link. It cannot be turned off, but you can reset it to make a new one.
- Your story. As admin, you can add the channel to a story.
- A message shared to your story. Tap and hold a channel message, then Share to story; viewers tap the image to find and join.
- A QR code. Tap the channel name, then QR code, for people to scan with their phone camera.
Admins, moderators and collaborators
| Role | What it can do |
|---|---|
| Admin | The creator. Changes the name or theme, shares to story, invites or removes collaborators and moderators, unsends messages, manages reactions and replies, deletes the channel. |
| Moderator | Up to 4 per channel. Sends and removes messages, adds or removes collaborators, resets invite links, hides reactions. |
| Collaborator | Invited by an admin. Can send messages to members, which are discoverable by anyone, even if the collaborator's own account is private. |
| Member | Reads, reacts, replies and votes. Cannot send messages. |
Moderators and collaborators have to accept an invitation, and the admin is notified whether they accept or decline. A channel's theme is set the same way as a chat's, which how to change the chat theme in Instagram walks through.
What is public in a channel
Instagram is clear that channels are not private. A channel stays searchable, visible and joinable by people who do not follow you, even if you switch your profile to private. Anything you share from a private profile into the channel appears as unavailable to people who do not follow you.
Blocking does not reach into channels either. If you and someone you blocked are in the same channel, Instagram tells you before you enter it. Channels go through additional review, and your channel activity is included when you download your data. For the rest of Instagram's privacy settings, see Instagram privacy, who sees what.
For a brand account
For a brand that has passed 1,000 followers, a channel is a direct line to the people who care most: launch dates, restocks, event details, a poll on what to make next. It lands in their inbox rather than competing in the feed.
- Post when there is news, not to keep the thread busy.
- Use polls, since voting is the one thing every member can do.
- Remember it is public. Write every message as if a stranger will read it, because one can.
If you want help planning what goes into a channel and the posts around it, the Instagram management service covers both.
How we will test this
Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.
This is the test we will run: we create a channel on an eligible test account, join it from a second account, and record the invite notification, what a non-follower sees through the invite link, and how a private profile's shared post appears to non-followers.
Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.
