The best time to post on social media, overall
Only one large study in 2026 covers every major platform with the same method. Sprout Social analyzed nearly 2 billion engagements across roughly 307,000 social profiles belonging to more than 30,000 of its customers, between November 27, 2025 and February 27, 2026, and reported every time in the audience's local time.
| Question | Sprout Social's 2026 answer |
|---|---|
| Best days | Tuesday and Wednesday, highest across almost all platforms. |
| Best hours | Midday to late afternoon. The summary says 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the table on the same page says 12 to 6 p.m. |
| Worst day | Sunday, lowest across the board. |
| Worst times | Weekends and early mornings, on every platform it lists. |
| What it counts | Total interactions: reactions, comments, shares, direct messages and link clicks. |
That is a reasonable starting point if you know nothing else about your audience. It is also a single company's customers, measured on engagement, which is why the platform studies below do not always agree with it.
The best time to post on each platform
Each platform has its own studies, and the details are in the guide for each one. This is where they land:
| Platform | Sprout Social 2026 | Other published studies | Full guide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monday to Thursday, midday to evening; Tuesday 1 to 7 p.m., Wednesday 12 to 9 p.m. | Buffer: Thursday 9 a.m., Wednesday 12 p.m. Metricool: 6 to 9 p.m. every day. | Best time to post on Instagram | |
| TikTok | Monday to Friday, mid to late afternoon; Tuesday 2 to 6 p.m. | Buffer: Sunday 9 a.m. Metricool: 6 to 8 p.m. | Best time to post on TikTok |
| Monday to Thursday; Tuesday and Wednesday 12 to 8 p.m. | Buffer: Thursday 9 a.m., weekday mornings, and 12 to 5 p.m. as the weakest block. | Best time to post on Facebook | |
| YouTube | Not covered. | vidIQ: Sunday best, Wednesday weakest. Buffer: Sunday 10 a.m. for long form video. | Best time to post on YouTube |
| Tuesday to Thursday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. | None read for this page. | No guide yet | |
| X | Tuesday to Thursday, 12 to 6 p.m. | None read for this page. | No guide yet |
| Tuesday to Thursday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. | None read for this page. | Pinterest Trends shows seasons, not hours |
The pattern underneath is that the visual feeds, Instagram, TikTok and Facebook, run later into the day than the text feeds, LinkedIn and X, which Sprout finds concentrated in working hours.
The best time to post on Tuesday, on one clock
Tuesday is the day the studies agree on most, which makes it the clearest way to see how far apart the platforms still are within one day:
Read across the rows and the useful answer appears. On a Tuesday, the afternoon is covered by Sprout on every platform; Instagram and TikTok also have strong evenings in Metricool's data, with Metricool calling Tuesday 8 p.m. the single highest peak in its whole Instagram study; and Facebook's best Buffer slot is in the morning, before any of the others.
The best time to post on Thursday
Thursday is where the studies disagree most within a weekday. Buffer's best Instagram slot of the whole week is Thursday 9 a.m., and Thursday is the only weekday in its data where mornings beat evenings. Its best Facebook slot is also Thursday 9 a.m. Sprout puts Thursday at 12 to 2 p.m. on Instagram and Facebook, with a second Facebook peak at 8 p.m., and 1 to 5 p.m. on TikTok. Metricool puts Thursday at 6 to 8 p.m. on Instagram and 8 p.m. on TikTok.
Three studies, three parts of the day. If Thursday matters to your business, test it at two different hours rather than copying one table.
The best time to post on Sunday, where the studies split
Sunday is the only day the studies flatly contradict each other. Sprout Social calls it the worst day to post on social media, with the lowest engagement across the board. The video studies say the opposite: vidIQ's 40.2 million YouTube uploads did about 3.5% better on Sunday than on a channel's average day, Buffer's best day for long form YouTube video is Sunday, its headline TikTok slot is Sunday 9 a.m., and it calls Sunday evening the strongest weekend window on Instagram.
The disagreement has a likely explanation in what is being measured. Sprout counts interactions with brand accounts that use its tool, while vidIQ measures views on YouTube uploads, and people do different things with a free Sunday than with a working Tuesday. So the answer to "when should I post on Sunday" depends on the platform: for YouTube and longer video, Sunday is a strong day; for a brand account chasing comments and clicks on Facebook or LinkedIn, it is the weakest.
Why the studies disagree
- Different customers. Each dataset is one tool's own users, with their own mix of countries, industries and account sizes.
- Different measures. Total interactions, median engagement rate and views rank the same hours differently.
- Different months. Sprout's data covers late November to late February, a season with its own habits; the platform studies cover other windows.
- One clock for many places. Every study reports local time, which assumes your audience shares one; many do not.
- Scheduled posts. The samples are posts sent through scheduling tools, which cluster on round hours.
None of the numbers on this page comes from Instagram, TikTok, Meta or YouTube. Instagram and TikTok publish how they rank content, and the hour of posting is not among the factors either of them lists.
How much the posting time actually matters
Only one of these studies publishes the size of the effect rather than a ranking. vidIQ found the best day beat a channel's average by about 3.5% and the worst trailed by about 2.2%, and that the exact upload hour barely moves views by day 30. That is YouTube, not every platform, but it tells you what kind of number to expect: a few percent, not the difference between a post that works and one that does not.
So the hour deserves one careful test and then a fixed slot. The opening of the post, the topic and how quickly you answer the people who reply decide more; for short video, nine ways to open a Reel is a better use of the time than another timing chart.
Finding your own best times, platform by platform
Every platform shows you when your own audience is active, which no study can:
| Platform | Where your audience's hours are |
|---|---|
| Professional dashboard, Insights, then the audience or total followers section, which reports follower activity by hour and day over the past 90 days. | |
| TikTok | TikTok Studio, Analytics, then the Followers tab. |
| YouTube | YouTube Studio, Analytics, Audience, in the module called When your viewers are on YouTube. |
| Meta Business Suite, or the Insights section of your Page, in the audience or followers view. |
Write down the two hours that stay high across the week, check which hours your own best posts went out at, and start where the two lists overlap. For an audience in one time zone the picture is sharper still, as YouTube upload time in India shows.
A posting schedule a business can keep
- Pick the platforms first. Two done well beat five done in gaps.
- Give each platform its own slot. The same post sent everywhere at one hour suits only one of them; write once and schedule twice.
- Start from your own activity data, and use the studies only to break a tie.
- Hold the slots for eight weeks, with at least five posts in each, and compare medians at 30 days.
- Keep someone available in the hour after each post goes out to answer replies.
Scheduling ahead takes the hour off your hands: how to schedule Instagram posts and how to schedule TikTok posts cover the free tools and their limits. Planning the rhythm across platforms is part of our social media management.
How we will test this
Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.
This is the test we will run: we post the same format in two fixed slots on each of our own test accounts across eight weeks, compare medians at 30 days, and record what each platform's own audience activity screen reports for the same period.
Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next
What is the best time to post on social media?+
Across platforms, Sprout Social's 2026 study puts Tuesday and Wednesday, from about midday to 6 p.m. local time, on top. The platform studies agree on midweek but differ on hours, so check the platform you post on.
What is the best day to post on social media?+
Tuesday and Wednesday in Sprout Social's 2026 data, across almost all platforms. YouTube is the exception, where vidIQ and Buffer both put Sunday first.
What is the worst day to post on social media?+
Sunday, according to Sprout Social, with the lowest engagement across the board. That does not hold for YouTube, where Sunday is the best day in two separate studies.
What is the best time to post on Tuesday?+
Midday to early evening on most platforms in Sprout's data, with Instagram and TikTok evenings strong in Metricool's, and Facebook's best Buffer slot at 8 a.m.
What is the best time to post on Thursday?+
It depends on the study: Buffer says 9 a.m. for Instagram and Facebook, Sprout says 12 to 2 p.m. for both, and Metricool says early evening. Thursday is the weekday to test at two different hours.
What is the best time to post on a Sunday?+
For YouTube and longer video, Sunday morning is strong: Buffer's best long form slot is Sunday 10 a.m. For brand accounts on Facebook, LinkedIn or X, Sprout calls Sunday the worst day.
Is the best time the same on every platform?+
No. Facebook's best Buffer slots are in the morning, Instagram's Metricool peak is in the evening, TikTok runs later into the afternoon, and LinkedIn and X stay within working hours in Sprout's data.
What time zone are these times in?+
Your audience's local time. All of these studies report local time, so 1 p.m. means 1 p.m. wherever your followers are.
Does posting time really matter?+
A little. The one study that measures the effect, vidIQ's, found a few percent between the best and worst days and almost nothing from the hour by day 30.
Should I post at the same time on every platform?+
No. The platforms peak at different hours, so write the post once and schedule it separately for each.
How do I find my own best time to post?+
Use each platform's audience activity data: Instagram Insights, TikTok Studio analytics, YouTube Studio's When your viewers are on YouTube, and Meta Business Suite for Facebook. Start where your audience's active hours and your best posts overlap.
Do Instagram or TikTok publish a best time to post?+
No. The platforms publish how they rank content, and the posting hour is not among the factors either lists. Every timing number comes from third party studies.
