Adding more pictures before you post
This is the only point at which you can add photos. A post with several photos is a carousel, and it holds up to 20 photos and videos:
- Tap Create, then POST.
- Tap SELECT MULTIPLE.
- Choose up to 20 photos and videos, in the order you want them.
- Crop, filter, drag to reorder, then tap Next and Share.
Two rules catch people here. The orientation you choose applies to every item, so you cannot mix a square photo with a portrait one. And if you are not sure the set is complete, save it as a draft instead of sharing it: drafts are saved on that phone only. Every step is in how to post multiple photos on Instagram.
After you share it: what can and cannot change
No. The Help Center lists what you can change in a shared post, and adding a photo is not on it. When Instagram announced carousel reordering in March 2026, coverage of the update, from Social Media Today and Business Standard among others, said that adding new media after publishing is still not possible.
| In a shared post | Can you change it? | How |
|---|---|---|
| Add a photo or video | No | Post again, as a new carousel. |
| Order of carousel items | Yes | Long press an item and drag it to its new place. |
| Caption | Yes | Options above the post, Edit, change it, Done. |
| Alt text | Yes | Options, Edit, Edit Alt Text. |
| Location | Yes | Options, Edit, then Add Location, or tap the location name to change or remove it. |
| The whole post | Yes | Archive it to hide it, or delete it. |
Reordering a carousel after posting
Until March 2026 the order of a carousel was fixed once it went out. Instagram's @creators account announced the change on March 23, 2026: you can now reorder the photos and videos in a carousel after publishing, with a long press and drag, without deleting and uploading it again.
That covers the case where the photo you wanted to lead with ended up second or fifth. Move it to the front and the post opens on it. Likes and comments stay on the post, because you are editing it rather than replacing it. The update rolled out gradually, so it may reach some accounts later than others.
What to do instead of adding a photo
- The missing photo matters to the post: repost the full set as a new carousel, then archive or delete the old one.
- It is an extra, not a correction: post it on its own, or as the first photo of a new carousel that continues the story.
- It belongs with the post for a day: share it to your story, where adding is always possible.
- The order was the problem: reorder, as above, and leave the post alone otherwise.
Reposting without losing much
Reposting means the new post starts at zero likes and comments. A few habits soften that:
- Decide fast. A post that went out a few minutes ago has little to lose; a week old post with a long comment thread has a lot.
- Archive rather than delete if the old post has comments worth keeping. Archiving hides it from your profile, your followers and everyone else without deleting it.
- Reuse the caption, edited, and say in it that this is the complete set, so people who saw the first version know why it is back.
To delete it instead, tap Options above the post, then Delete, and confirm. Several posts can be deleted at once from Your activity, under Content you shared.
Adding pictures to a story instead
Stories work the other way around: you can keep adding to yours as often as you like, and each photo becomes a new frame. To put several photos on one frame, use Layout:
- Tap Create, then Story.
- Tap Layout on the left, and tap the grid to change the arrangement.
- Take or choose the photos, tap Approve, then finish and share.
A story disappears after 24 hours unless you add it to a highlight; how long Instagram stories last covers both.
Letting other people add to your post
Instagram has a Help Center page titled Allow others to add photos or videos to your posts, which would let other accounts add to a post you made. The page currently says only that the feature is not yet available for everyone, and gives no steps. If it reaches your account, it will change the answer for shared posts; until then, assume it is not there.
For a business account
For a brand, a carousel that is missing a product is a different problem from one that is in the wrong order. Reorder the second kind in place. Repost the first kind quickly, before the old post collects comments. The better fix is upstream:
- Build the full set before you open the app, in the order you want, and count it.
- Use drafts when the set is waiting on one more photo, so nothing goes out half finished.
- Put the strongest image first, since slide one is what people see in the feed; the Instagram carousel guide covers slide one in detail.
If you would like someone else to handle the posting, the Instagram management service plans and publishes it.
How we will test this
Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.
This is the test we will run: we share a carousel from a test account, reorder it, edit its caption, alt text and location, and look for any way to add an item, on iPhone, Android and a desktop browser, with screenshots of each edit screen.
Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.
