Instagram carousel.

Twenty slides, one orientation for all of them, and a first slide that decides whether anyone sees the other nineteen.

Short answer

An Instagram carousel is a single post with up to 20 photos and videos that people swipe through. One orientation applies to every slide, captions can be one for the post or one per slide, and videos inside a carousel are not treated as Reels.

What an Instagram carousel is

A carousel is one post holding up to 20 photos and videos. In the feed people see the first item with a row of dots under it and swipe for the rest; on your profile the cover carries the carousel icon in the corner.

Likes and comments belong to the whole post rather than to individual slides, so a carousel gathers its engagement in one place. To make one, tap POST, then SELECT MULTIPLE, and choose up to 20 items. Every step, including captions per slide and reordering, is in how to post multiple photos on Instagram, and the order can still be changed after the post is shared.

The rules that catch people out

RuleWhat it means in practice
One orientation for all slidesSquare, portrait or landscape applies to the whole post. You cannot mix a portrait slide with a square one, so design every slide to the same shape before you upload.
Up to 20 itemsPhotos and videos share the same budget of 20.
Videos in a carousel are not ReelsThey do not appear in the Reels tab or get Reels features. A video that needs to reach strangers should be posted as a Reel instead.
One location, tags per slideThe post has a single location, while people can be tagged in each item.
Likes and comments are sharedThey count for the post, not per slide, so you cannot tell from them which slide worked.
Captions can be per slideMultiple captions helps when each slide is its own idea.
Five hashtagsThe same limit as any other post, covered in Instagram hashtags for Reels.

Size and quality

The image resolution rules decide whether a carousel looks sharp:

  • Photos are uploaded at the best quality up to a width of 1080 pixels.
  • A photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keeps its resolution if its aspect ratio is between 1.91:1 and 3:4. At 1080 wide, that is a height between 566 and 1440 pixels.
  • A photo with an unsupported ratio is cropped to fit a supported one.
  • A photo narrower than 320 pixels is enlarged, and anything wider than 1080 is sized down.

The safe recipe for a designed carousel is 1080 by 1350 pixels, the 4:5 portrait shape, exported at exactly that size. It fills the most screen on a phone and stays inside the supported range. The accepted shapes are drawn to scale in how to post on Instagram, and every platform's sizes are in social media post sizes.

Slide one does the work

A carousel gets one chance in the feed, like any other post. The first slide has to earn the swipe, and the last one has to reward the people who got there:

A carousel strip of portrait slides: the first slide carries the promise, the middle slides carry one idea each, and the last slide asks for one action. Slide one THE PROMISE The middle ONE IDEA PER SLIDE, IN THE ORDER A PERSON WOULD ASK Last slide ONE ACTION EVERY SLIDE 1080 BY 1350, ONE ORIENTATION FOR ALL
A schematic of the structure, not a real carousel. Only slide one is guaranteed to be seen.
SlideIts jobWhat goes wrong
FirstSay what the reader gets, in words large enough to read at thumbnail size.A pretty photo with no promise, or text too small to read in the feed.
MiddleOne idea per slide, in the order a person would ask about it.Paragraphs. If a slide needs a paragraph, it needs two slides.
LastOne thing to do: save it, read the caption, open the link, ask a question.Three calls to action, which means none.

Add alt text too. A slide that is mostly text is invisible to a screen reader without it. Add it before sharing under More options, or afterwards through Options, Edit, Edit Alt Text.

Seven carousel ideas that work for a brand

Each of these has a fixed shape, which is what makes it repeatable. Fill it with your own product and most of the carousel is decided:

IdeaThe shapeGood for
How it is madeCover, then one slide per step, then the finished thing.Makers, food, repair, anything with a process.
Five mistakesCover with the promise, one mistake per slide, the fix on each.Showing expertise without selling.
This or thatTwo options compared on the same three points.Buyers stuck between products.
Before and afterThe state, the work, the result, the price or the time it took.Services and transformations.
Answer a real questionThe question as the cover, the answer across the middle, what to do next at the end.Anything asked twice in your DMs.
The full rangeOne product per slide with the detail that separates it.Small catalogs and new collections.
Customer contentPhotos from buyers, credited, with a line each about how they use it.Proof without a testimonial graphic.

None of these needs a trend. A carousel is read rather than glanced at, so the content carries it.

Designing a carousel outside the app

Anything with text on it is easier to design on a computer and move to the phone afterwards. Three rules keep it sharp:

  1. Set the canvas to 1080 by 1350 pixels and design every slide at that exact size, so nothing is cropped or resized on upload.
  2. Export as PNG for text and flat color, and as high quality JPG for photographs.
  3. Keep text away from the edges. The bottom of the image sits near the caption and the action buttons in the feed.

If you draft the slide text with an AI tool, ask for the outline before the words, so you can fix the order first; prompts for Instagram posts has a carousel outline prompt to start from.

Then move the files to the phone and post from there, or post from the computer through Meta Business Suite, where an Instagram post takes up to 10 photos rather than 20. Business Suite can also schedule the post, as how to schedule Instagram posts explains.

What carousels are good at

  • Teaching. A process, a comparison, a before and after, a checklist.
  • Product detail. The thing from every angle, with the detail that answers the usual objection.
  • Proof. A finished job, the steps behind it, and what it took.
  • Answering a repeated question. The questions in your DMs are a content plan.
  • Being kept. A useful carousel is the kind of post people save to come back to.

Reaching strangers is a different job. The Reel is the format Instagram recommends to people who do not follow you, and how long Instagram Reels can be covers the limit that decides it.

What to measure on a carousel

Because likes and comments belong to the whole post, the useful numbers are elsewhere in insights:

  • Saves. The clearest sign that someone wanted to keep it.
  • Shares and sends. Someone passed it to a person who needed it.
  • How far people swipe. If most of the audience leaves at slide two, the promise on the cover did not match what followed.
  • Profile visits and follows from the post. The carousel did its job as an introduction.
  • Reach among non followers, compared with other carousels rather than with Reels, which reach people by a different route.

Engagement benchmarks for carousels against other formats circulate widely, but they come from third party samples rather than from Instagram, so your own account is the only benchmark that decides anything.

A carousel plan for a business account

  1. Pick a question customers repeat. Sizing, shipping, care, what makes it different.
  2. Write the answer in six lines. That is six slides plus a cover.
  3. Design at 1080 by 1350 in your brand fonts, one idea per slide.
  4. Write the caption for the people who do not swipe. The first sentence should stand on its own.
  5. Post, then pin it if it answers something a new visitor asks.
  6. Check saves and shares, not likes. They tell you whether it was useful.

Carousels are one of the formats we plan every month in Instagram management.

How we will test this

Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.

This is the test we will run: we post carousels from our own test account with 20 items, with mixed orientations, with single and multiple captions, and with a video inside, and we record what the app allows, what the profile shows, and where the video appears.

Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next

How many photos can you put in an Instagram carousel?

Up to 20 photos and videos in one post.

Can slides have different orientations?

No. The orientation you choose, square, portrait or landscape, applies to every item in the post.

What size should an Instagram carousel be?

1080 by 1350 pixels is the safe portrait size. A photo keeps its resolution when it is 320 to 1080 pixels wide with a ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4.

Can you add a caption to each slide?

Yes. When you share, choose Multiple captions instead of Single caption to write one per photo or video.

Do videos in a carousel count as Reels?

No. Videos in carousels are not treated as Reels, do not show in the Reels tab and do not get Reels features.

Can you reorder slides after posting?

Yes. The items in a shared post can be reordered by editing it.

Can you add a slide to a carousel later?

Not in general. There is a feature that lets other people add to your post, and the Help Center says it is not yet available for everyone.

Do carousels get more reach than single posts?

Instagram has not said so. What carousels do collect is saves and swipes, which tell you the content was useful.

How many hashtags can a carousel have?

Five, the same as any other post since December 2025.

Can you tag people in a carousel?

Yes, per item. The post has one location, but each photo or video can have its own tags.
