Instagram hashtags for Reels.

For years every guide said thirty tags in the first comment. That advice now breaks the rules: Instagram allows five.

Short answer

Instagram allows up to five hashtags on a post, Reels included, and a post with more than five will not go through. Hashtags put a public post into search results; they are not a reach setting. So the five should describe the Reel rather than chase the biggest tags.

Five, not thirty

The Help Center rule is short: up to five tags on a post, and if a single photo or video carries more than five, the comment with them will not post.

Instagram's @Creators account and its head, Adam Mosseri, announced the cap in December 2025. Until then the limit was thirty, which is why most articles you will find still say thirty and still recommend a block of tags hidden in the first comment.

What hashtags do for a Reel, and what they do not

A hashtag does one job. On a public account, it puts the post into the search results for that tag. The order inside those results has nothing to do with the tag itself: Instagram lists when the post was shared, how people engage with it, and whether it meets the Recommendation Guidelines.

Mosseri's advice when the limit arrived was simple: a few specific tags work better than a long list of generic ones, and hashtags help people find content in search rather than increasing reach. A Reel is recommended to new people for other reasons, and adding tags does not change them.

Hashtags and keywords are not the same thing

A hashtag is a label you attach to the post. A keyword is a word inside it: said in the video, written on screen, used in the caption. Since the cap, keywords carry more of the load.

If you ask an AI tool for tags, ask for five specific ones and a reason for each; the wording is in prompts for Instagram posts.

How it agesPoorly. Tags fall out of use and some stop being searchable.Well. A clear phrase keeps matching the same question for years.

In practice the tags deserve two minutes per Reel. The spoken line and the words on screen deserve the rest of the attention, and the opening line most of all; nine ways to open a Reel covers what that line can do.

How to choose the five

Five slots means each tag has to say something the others do not. One way to split them, shown for a small ceramics brand:

SlotWhat goes in itExample
1. What the video isThe subject, in the words a buyer would use.#handmademugs
2. The categoryThe wider product or service category.#ceramics
3. The audience or useWho it is for, or when it is used.#coffeelovers
4. The placeCity or region, if you sell locally or where you ship from matters.#belgradeshops
5. Your own tagThe brand or campaign tag, so your own content collects in one place.#yourstudioname

Two habits are best dropped. The first is using tags with tens of millions of posts, where a new Reel is buried within seconds. The second is pasting the same five tags under every video whatever is in it, at which point the tags describe nothing.

Caption or first comment

Both are allowed and the limit is the same, so with five tags there is little reason left to hide them in a comment. At the end of the caption they stay with the post, they survive edits, and nobody has to open the comments to see what the video is about.

Old Reels with thirty tags in the first comment do not need fixing. The limit applies when you post or edit, so leave them alone unless you are changing the caption anyway.

People search Instagram with words, not only with tags, so the work that used to go into tag lists now goes into the words around the video:

  1. Say the phrase in the Reel, the way a customer would say it.
  2. Put the same phrase on screen in the first seconds, for everyone watching without sound.
  3. Write it in the caption as a sentence, not as a tag.
  4. Fill the profile name field with what you sell, because it is searched separately from the handle.
  5. Add alt text to photo posts. It describes the image for screen readers, and the steps are in how to post on Instagram.

TikTok went through the same shift earlier, and SEO for TikTok shows how search there reads the spoken words, the text and the caption. Sound works the same way as tags: finding trending songs on Instagram covers where to look and what you are allowed to use.

The rules, and tags that quietly do nothing

  • Numbers are allowed. Spaces and characters such as a dollar sign or a percent sign are not.
  • You can only tag your own posts, never someone else's.
  • Posts from a private account do not appear in hashtag search results at all.
  • A hashtag can stop being searchable if its text or the content under it keeps breaking the Terms or the Community Standards. Instagram reviews these periodically.

The last rule is what usually sits behind talk of a shadowban. Nothing is done to your account. The tag itself stops being searchable, so a post that leans on it goes nowhere.

A hashtag routine that takes five minutes a week

  1. Choose the five per Reel, not per account. The video decides the tags.
  2. Search each tag before using it and look at the posts on its page. If they have nothing to do with your product, it is the wrong tag.
  3. Keep a short list per content theme, so filming day does not turn into research day.
  4. Check where views came from. Reels insights break views down by source. If search is not growing, the tags are not what needs work.
  5. Review the list every quarter. Tags fall out of use, and some stop being searchable.

Choosing them per post is part of our Instagram management, and the free social media audit checks whether your current tags describe the account or just fill space.

How we will test this

Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.

This is the test we will run: we post Reels from our own test account with five tags and with six, in the caption and in the first comment, and record what the app allows, what it blocks, and what the Reel's insights report as the source of its views after seven days.

Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next

How many hashtags can you use on an Instagram Reel?

Five. Up to five tags per post, and a post with more than five will not go through. The old limit of thirty ended in December 2025.

Do hashtags help Reels get more views?

They put a public post into the matching search results. The order there depends on recency, engagement and the Recommendation Guidelines, and Instagram's head has said hashtags help search rather than reach.

Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?

Either is allowed and the limit is the same. With only five, the end of the caption is the simpler place, where they stay with the post.

What happens if I use more than five hashtags?

The post or comment will not go through. Remove tags until there are five or fewer.

Do old posts with thirty hashtags need fixing?

No. The limit applies when you post or edit. Leave old Reels alone unless you are editing the caption anyway.

Are banned hashtags a real thing?

A hashtag may stop being searchable if its text or the content under it keeps breaking the Terms or Community Standards, and Instagram reviews them periodically. The account is not punished, the tag simply leads nowhere.

Can I use the same five hashtags on every Reel?

You can, and it is the most common mistake. Tags describe the video, so a template set stops describing anything and adds no search value.

Do hashtags work on a private account?

No. Posts from private accounts do not appear publicly in hashtag search results.

Can I add hashtags to a Reel after posting?

Yes, by editing the caption or by adding a comment, within the same five tag limit.

What are the best hashtags for Reels?

There is no list that works for everyone, and any article that gives you one is selling traffic. The five that work are the ones that describe this video, this category, this audience, this place and your brand.

What are the best viral hashtags for reels?

There is no such list. A post is capped at five hashtags, so a copied list of thirty viral tags cannot even be posted, and the tags that trend are trending because of the videos under them rather than the other way round.

Do hashtags like love or sad help a reel?

Broad tags put your Reel in the largest possible pile. A tag with millions of posts behind it is a tag where yours is visible for seconds. Five specific words that describe what is actually in the video do more.
