SEO for TikTok.

People search inside the app, and TikTok gives creators a keyword tool and search analytics. That is more than enough to work with, and less than most articles claim to know.

Short answer

SEO for TikTok means making a video findable in TikTok's own search: saying the phrase out loud, putting it on screen and in the description, and choosing topics from Creator Search Insights. TikTok names its ranking factors as user interactions, content information and user information.

SEO for TikTok starts with TikTok's own search

TikTok's search covers people, posts, sounds and hashtags. Its Help Center says the most relevant results appear in the Top tab, and that filters sit behind the More options button.

One line on that page matters more than it looks. Content that is not appropriate will not be shown in search results at all, which makes the Community Guidelines a ranking factor before any keyword is.

So the work splits in two. Be eligible, then be findable. What TikTok holds back from the For You feed, and why that matters for growth, is in how to get followers on TikTok.

What TikTok publishes about ranking

TikTok names three main factors for what it recommends: user interactions, content information and user information.

It also says something most guides skip: each factor can play a larger or smaller role, and how important each one is can change over time. That is TikTok telling you the weights move.

FactorWhat sits inside itWhat you control
User interactionsWhat a person watches, likes, follows and skips.Nothing directly. You influence it by making something people choose to watch.
Content informationWhat the post is: captions, sounds, hashtags, the words in it.All of it. This is where SEO happens.
User informationLocation and language settings, device and account.Nothing, beyond knowing who you are actually reaching.

TikTok also describes how it predicts: if one person likes videos one to three and another likes one to five, it may predict the first will like four and five. Content information is what tells the system which group your video belongs to.

Creator Search Insights, the part most people never open

TikTok publishes a keyword tool inside the app. It is reached by searching Creator Search Insights and tapping View at the top of the results.

  • Topics people search for, personalized to your account.
  • A Content gap filter, which surfaces topics that may be lacking in content. That is the closest thing on the platform to a keyword difficulty score.
  • Searches by followers, available once you have more than 1000 followers, which shows what your own audience looks for.
  • Favorites, to save topics for a filming day.
  • Analytics, split into All posts and Inspired posts, for how your content performs in search.

Two warnings come from TikTok itself. Some topics are AI generated, and AI might misinterpret topics or generate factually incorrect or misleading ones. And if you have turned off personalization, the topics you are shown will not be personalized.

Putting a keyword where TikTok can read it

A phrase should appear in more than one place, because each one is read differently.

  1. Say it out loud, in the first seconds. Spoken words are carried by captions.
  2. Put it on screen as text, for everyone watching without sound.
  3. Write it in the description as a sentence a person would actually read.
  4. Use it as one of the hashtags, if it works as one. A hashtag is a label, not a substitute for the other three.
  5. Name the file and the cover honestly, so the cover text repeats the promise rather than hiding it.

The test is simple. If someone typed that phrase into the search bar, would this video be the thing they hoped to find. If not, better wording will not save it.

The profile, the description and the sound

Search results include people, not only posts. A profile that names what you do is findable in a way that a clever handle is not.

WhereWhat to put there
Name fieldWhat you sell and where, in plain words.
BioWho it is for and what to do next.
DescriptionOne sentence with the phrase, then the hashtags at the end.
SoundsA sound is searchable in its own right, and a post on a rising sound is findable through it.
PlaylistsGroup related videos so one found video leads to the next.

Keywords and hashtags are not the same job

A keyword is a word inside the content. A hashtag is a label attached to it. TikTok SEO leans on the first and uses the second as a tidy label.

KeywordHashtag
Where it livesSpoken audio, on screen text, the description, the profile. The description, prefixed with #.
What it doesDescribes the content itself, which is what content information means.Groups the post with others carrying the same label.
Ages likeWell. A question people ask keeps being asked.Poorly. Tags fall in and out of use.
How manyOne phrase per video, used in several places.A few that describe the video, not a wall of them.

The mistake is stuffing. A description written for a machine reads badly to the person who found it, and that person is the one who decides whether to watch.

The word algorithm, and what it hides

Most TikTok SEO advice is really algorithm folklore: a completion rate threshold, a magic number of hashtags, a posting hour. TikTok publishes none of those numbers.

What it does publish is the shape of the system. Three factors, weights that move, and predictions built from what similar users liked. Everything beyond that is somebody's sample of their own accounts.

This is the case for writing for search rather than for the feed. A video that answers a question can keep being found through search after the feed has moved on. The same thinking on Instagram, where hashtags now matter less than the words in the video, is in Instagram hashtags for Reels, and across every platform in social media SEO.

TikTok results in Google, and the other direction

TikTok videos turn up in Google results, which is the second reason the words in a description matter. A clear description is the text a general search engine can read.

It also runs the other way. People search Google for a product, land on a review, then open TikTok to see the thing in someone's hands. A brand that answers the same question in both places is in front of the same person twice.

Neither placement is controllable, and no agency should promise it. Writing clearly about what you actually sell is the input both systems can read.

Screenshot visual search, and the setting to check

TikTok added a visual search: take a screenshot inside the app and tap the thumbnail to find matching content and products. It is for people at least 18 years old who are logged in, and the screenshots stay on the device rather than on TikTok's servers.

The part that concerns a brand is the other side of it. Depending on your location, when you create a post you can choose whether it may appear in visual search results, and the setting is turned on by default.

For anyone selling a physical product, that is a discovery route to leave on, and to check before posting.

Finding the phrases your niche actually types

Generic phrases belong to whoever has the largest audience. A niche phrase belongs to whoever answered it, which is why a small account can win one.

  1. Take the questions from your own comments and messages. Those are queries somebody typed somewhere first.
  2. Add the words your customers use, not the words your industry uses. Users search for the problem, not for the product category.
  3. Check each one in TikTok search and look at what comes back. If nothing on the first screen answers it properly, that is your video.
  4. Run it through the Content gap filter in Creator Search Insights.
  5. Keep a list of ten and film against it, rather than deciding on the day.

Ten answered questions do more for a niche audience than fifty videos chasing whatever is moving this week.

Captions, accessibility and the words TikTok can read

Captions are the bridge between what you say and what a search system can index. They also make the video usable with the sound off, which is how a large share of people watch.

Auto captions are a starting point, not a finish. Product names, place names and anything spoken quickly get mangled, and a wrong word is a phrase your video no longer matches.

So read the captions before posting and fix the words that carry meaning. It takes a minute per video, it helps every viewer, and it is the rare accessibility habit that pays for itself in reach.

Measuring whether any of this worked

Search analytics inside Creator Search Insights is the only honest scoreboard, because it reports how your posts perform in search rather than in the feed.

  • Compare All posts with Inspired posts, the ones you made from a suggested topic.
  • Watch a video's life after week one. Feed reach dies quickly. Search traffic does not, and that is the whole reason to do this.
  • Search the phrase yourself, in a logged out session, and see what comes back.
  • Track the questions in your comments. A repeated question is a search query somebody typed first.

What nobody can promise you

Three claims to refuse when you hear them:

  1. A ranking position. The weight of TikTok's factors changes over time, and results are personalized. There is no fixed number one.
  2. An exact search volume. TikTok shows topics and relative popularity inside its own tool. Precise monthly numbers for TikTok search come from third party estimates, not from TikTok.
  3. A keyword list that works for everyone. The Content gap filter is personalized to your account, which is exactly what makes it useful and what makes a shared list worthless.

If a search error appears while you are checking your own results, wait at least 24 hours before searching again.

A search routine that fits in a filming day

  1. Open Creator Search Insights before filming, not after. Pick three topics, two of them from the Content gap filter.
  2. Write the phrase as a spoken line and as an on screen line, before the camera comes out.
  3. Film the three, then write descriptions that read like sentences.
  4. Check search analytics weekly, and keep the topics that still bring views a month later.
  5. Turn the winners into more of the same, because a question that was searched once will be searched again.

The words work best alongside the rest of the video: a sound people search for (finding popular TikTok songs), a few specific hashtags (finding trending TikTok hashtags) and an opening that holds people (nine ways to open a Reel). Doing this every week is part of our TikTok marketing, and the free social media audit checks whether your existing videos answer anything anyone is actually searching for.

How we will test this

Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.

This is the test we will run: we run the same phrases through TikTok search from logged out and logged in accounts, open Creator Search Insights on our own test accounts, and record what the Content gap filter returns, what search analytics reports, and how a video's views split between the feed and search after seven and thirty days.

Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next

What is SEO for TikTok?

Making your videos findable in TikTok's own search: the phrase spoken, on screen and in the description, and topics chosen from what people search for.

Does TikTok have a keyword tool?

Yes. Creator Search Insights, reached by searching for it in the app, shows topics people search for, a Content gap filter, and search analytics for your posts.

What are TikTok's ranking factors?

TikTok names user interactions, content information and user information, and says how important each one is can change over time.

Do hashtags matter for TikTok search?

They are one signal among several. The words spoken in the video, the text on screen and the description carry more, because they describe the content itself.

How do I find what people search for on TikTok?

Use the Content gap filter in Creator Search Insights, and the Searches by followers filter once you have more than 1000 followers.

Are Creator Search Insights topics reliable?

Use them with care. Some topics are AI generated and that AI might misinterpret topics or generate factually incorrect or misleading ones.

Can I see TikTok search volume?

TikTok shows search popularity for a topic inside its own tool. Exact monthly numbers quoted elsewhere are third party estimates, not TikTok figures.

Why does my video not appear in search?

Check that it is public and within the Community Guidelines. TikTok says content that is not appropriate will not be shown in search results.

What is screenshot visual search?

Taking a screenshot in the app to find matching content and products. It is for logged in people at least 18 years old, and you can choose whether your own post appears in those results before posting.

How long does TikTok SEO take to work?

Longer than a trend and shorter than web search. Feed reach fades within days, while a video that answers a searched question keeps collecting views. Judge it at thirty days, not at three.
