How to get followers on TikTok

TikTok publishes its own advice on growing an audience, and its rules spell out what it removes. Between the two, most of the tricks you will hear about are ruled out, and what is left is simple to describe.

Short answer

To get followers on TikTok, get your videos into the For You feed, because that is where people who do not know you find you. TikTok's own advice is to post high quality videos regularly, make some longer than one minute, engage in comments and LIVE, collaborate through Duet and Stitch, and study your analytics. Do not buy followers or post follow for follow requests: TikTok removes fake followers and keeps posts that ask for follows out of the For You feed.

How new people find you on TikTok

Followers come from people who saw a video of yours and wanted more. People who do not know you yet meet you through the For You feed, which TikTok fills by recommendation, or through search. Getting followers starts with being shown in one of the two.

TikTok names three groups of factors behind its recommendations: how people interact with videos, information about the video, and information about the viewer. It says the weight of each changes over time, and that it deliberately mixes in creators people have not seen before. That last point matters for a small account: the feed is built to show newcomers.

What TikTok itself advises

TikTok's help page on growing an audience is short. Its four headings, in plain terms:

TikTok's adviceWhat it means in practice
Get to know your audienceAnswer comments, go LIVE, and read your analytics to see which posts people engaged with.
Post high quality contentRegularly, and include videos longer than one minute. Use TikTok Studio to manage it.
Use monetization toolsPrograms such as Creator Rewards, in the regions where they exist.
Collaborate with other creatorsReach out to similar creators, and use Duet, Stitch and LIVE together.

The one minute point lines up with TikTok's Creator Rewards rules, which only pay for videos of at least a minute. The length limits and that rule are in how long a TikTok can be.

The For You feed is not the only door. People search TikTok for topics, and the words you say, write on screen and put in the description are what search reads. TikTok also offers Creator Search Insights, which shows topics people are searching for, including a Content gap filter for searches with too few good videos. Answering a real search gives a small account a way in besides the feed; SEO for TikTok covers it in full.

What TikTok keeps out of the For You feed

TikTok's Community Guidelines list kinds of content that are allowed on the platform but not eligible for the For You feed. Two of them catch people trying to grow:

  • Posts asking for follows or likes. Content that tries to manipulate people into inflating likes or follows is not eligible. A follow for follow video works against itself.
  • Reposted material with nothing new. Unoriginal or reused content without anything added is not eligible either. Reuploading someone else's viral clip is not a shortcut.

If a post seems to stall, turn on analytics and check it: TikTok shows in a post's Analytics when it has been marked ineligible for the For You feed, and lets you appeal. The account side of this, including violations and bans, is in how to recover a TikTok account.

Why buying followers fails

TikTok's rules on fake engagement are blunt. It does not allow the trade of services that artificially boost engagement, it strictly prohibits automation tools and scripts, and when it detects inauthentic metrics, it removes the fake likes and followers. Accounts caught can be restricted, which can mean limits on posting and on appearing in top search results and the For You feed, or banned outright.

So a bought follower count is temporary at best, and it carries a risk to the account itself. It also teaches you nothing about what real viewers want.

Paying for reach with Promote

The legitimate way to pay is Promote, TikTok's own tool for turning a post into an ad. You choose a goal, pick a budget, and pay; TikTok reports the results, including new followers and post and profile views. A few rules apply:

  • You must be 18 or older, with a creator or Business Account.
  • The post must be public and use original sound or sound cleared for commercial use.
  • Stories cannot be promoted, and a post can be rejected under the Community Guidelines or ads policy.

TikTok's own note on Promote is to the point: it only improves visibility. Paid reach still lands on the video itself, so the video has to make people want more.

Reading what actually brings followers

Turn analytics on in TikTok Studio; data only exists for videos posted after you do. Then look at which videos brought new followers, not just views. Give each video a day or two, because TikTok says analytics can take 1 to 2 days to update, and remember that follower activity is shown in your local time while the rest is in UTC.

The best time to post is one of the questions those numbers help with; the best time to post on TikTok compares the published studies.

For a business account

A business grows on TikTok the same way a person does, with one extra limit: Business Accounts use the Commercial Music Library, so some popular sounds are off the table. The rest of TikTok's advice translates directly:

  • Answer real questions customers ask, which suits both search and the For You feed.
  • Show the work, not the logo: process, behind the scenes, results. Selling straight from a video is covered in TikTok made me buy it.
  • Answer comments, which TikTok lists first among the ways to get to know your audience.

What TikTok can do for a business is set out in what TikTok marketing is, and the TikTok marketing service runs it for you.

How we will test this

Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.

This is the test we will run: we run a new test account for eight weeks following only the advice on this page, record which videos brought followers according to TikTok's analytics, and check how many posts were marked ineligible for the For You feed and why.

Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.
