What "TikTok made me buy it" means

The phrase says what happened: someone saw a product in a video, bought it, and posted about it with #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt. Videos under the hashtag show a product doing its job, with the poster's verdict.

TikTok itself wrote about the trend in 2022, calling it one of the more prolific hashtags on the platform and reporting 12.4 billion views on it by April that year. Treat that as a snapshot from TikTok's own newsroom, not a current count.

Why products sell from TikTok videos

The same 2022 piece cited research TikTok commissioned. By TikTok's own figures at the time, 41% of users bought a product immediately after discovering it on TikTok, and 67% said TikTok inspired them to shop even when they were not planning to. These are the platform's claims about itself, made to advertisers, so read them as direction rather than as independent measurement.

How buying from a TikTok video works

TikTok Shop lets you buy inside the app, if you are 18 or older (or meet the local age rule). There are three routes:

TikTok Shop works in the app only, not on the website. Your cart sits at the top of the Shop tab, so you can collect items from several videos and check out once.

Telling a paid post from a real review

TikTok requires creators to switch on its content disclosure setting whenever they promote a brand, product or service, including their own business or another company in exchange for payment or any other incentive. The post then carries a label:

• Paid partnership: branded content made for another business.
• Promotional content: someone promoting their own brand or business.

Posts without the required disclosure can be removed or restricted. So a glowing #TikTokMadeMeBuyIt video with neither label is presented as unpaid; one with a label is an ad, which does not make it untrue, but tells you who is paying.

Shopping safely on TikTok Shop

• Checkout runs through third party payment platforms that TikTok works with.
• Returns are allowed within a set period after delivery; the period and policy vary by region, so check it before buying.
• Sellers must follow TikTok's Seller Terms of Service, Terms of Service and Community Guidelines.
• Help is in the app: tap Shop, then Help below the search bar, then your order or Other issues, and Contact us if needed.

Before you buy, look at the seller, the reviews and the return terms on the product page, not only at the video.

What are the top selling products on TikTok?

There is no public ranking we can point you to. TikTok's Creative Center has a Top Products view for advertisers, but it now sits behind a TikTok One login, and the public trends view shows only the top three hashtags without logging in. Lists of "top selling products" elsewhere come from third party tracking we cannot check, so we do not repeat any.

For a business selling on TikTok

For a seller, the hashtag describes the outcome you want: a customer telling other customers. A few things make that more likely:

• Show the product working, in a real setting, in the first seconds.
• Turn on the disclosure whenever you or a creator promotes it; TikTok says the label does not affect distribution.
• Make it easy to buy by linking the product, so a viewer does not have to search.
• Earn the reposts. Customer videos only happen if the product lives up to the first one.
