What is TikTok marketing?

The phrase covers four different jobs that need different skills and different budgets. Most people trying it are doing one of them and expecting results from another.

Short answer

TikTok marketing is using TikTok to reach and sell to customers, through four separate channels: organic posting from your own account, paid advertising through TikTok Ads Manager, partnerships with creators, and selling directly through TikTok Shop. Each one needs different work.

What TikTok marketing actually means

TikTok marketing is the use of TikTok to reach customers, whether through content you post yourself, advertising you pay for, creators you work with, or products you sell in the app.

It gets treated as one thing, and it is four. A business posting three videos a week and a business buying ads are doing entirely different work, with different people, budgets and timescales.

The confusion is expensive. Most disappointment with TikTok comes from doing one of these four and expecting the results of another.

The four parts, side by side

PartWhat it isWhat it costsWhat it delivers
OrganicPosting from your own account.Time, consistently.Slow compounding reach, and an audience you keep.
PaidAds through TikTok Ads Manager.Budget, plus creative.Reach on demand, which stops when the spend stops.
CreatorsPaying other people to make content.Fees, plus management.Borrowed trust and volume of content.
ShopSelling products inside the app.Operations and fulfillment.Sales that never leave TikTok.

Most small businesses should do one of these properly rather than all four badly. Which one depends on whether your constraint is time, money or product.

Organic posting, which is where almost everyone starts

This is your own account, your own videos, no media spend. It is the cheapest to begin and the most demanding to sustain.

What TikTok publishes about how content is recommended sets the work. It names three main factors: user interactions, content information and user information. It also says that how important each factor is can change over time.

Content information is the only one of those you control. It covers what the post actually is: the words spoken, the text on screen, the description, the sounds and the hashtags. Each has its own guide: SEO for TikTok for the words, finding popular TikTok songs for the sounds a business may use, and finding trending TikTok hashtags for the tags.

There is a second and underused route. People search inside TikTok, and a video that answers a searched question keeps being found long after the feed has stopped serving it.

Paid advertising, in TikTok's own five steps

TikTok publishes the process for a first campaign, and it is shorter than most people expect.

  1. Create a TikTok Ads Manager account.
  2. Define the objective of your campaign.
  3. Select your target audience, including custom audiences.
  4. Set your budget, with a bid and a daily spend.
  5. Choose the video that will be used in the ad.

Objectives sit in three categories, which TikTok names as Awareness, Consideration and Conversion. Picking the wrong one is the most common early mistake, because the platform optimizes for exactly what you asked for.

The part that decides whether it works is step five. An ad on TikTok is a video, and a video that looks like an advertisement performs like one.

Creator partnerships

Paying creators to make content is the fastest way to get volume and the easiest way to waste money.

  • Pick creators whose audience matches yours, not the ones with the largest following.
  • Brief the idea, not the script. A creator's audience follows them for their voice, and a brand script removes the only thing you were buying.
  • Agree usage rights up front, so the video can also be used as an ad.
  • Expect variance. Most collaborations do nothing and a few carry the whole campaign.
  • Disclose the partnership properly, which is both a rule and the reason audiences tolerate it.

Typical creator rates circulate widely, but they come from surveys of other markets, so none are quoted here.

TikTok Shop, and what it changes

TikTok lists TikTok Shop among its business tools, alongside Ads Manager, Business Account and Business Center. Whatever you set up, keep the account on a company email and phone number, for the reasons in how to recover a TikTok account.

Growing the account itself follows TikTok's own published advice, set out in how to get followers on TikTok.

Selling inside the app removes the step where someone has to leave the app to buy. It adds operational work instead: listings, stock, fulfillment, returns and customer messages. How buying from a video looks to the customer, and how paid posts are labeled, is in TikTok made me buy it.

That trade makes sense for a product business with the capacity to run it, and little sense for a service business, so decide it before anyone opens an account. Availability, fees and requirements differ by country; check TikTok's own Shop pages for yours.

Why TikTok works differently from other platforms

One structural difference explains most of the advice that only applies here.

TikTok describes recommending content by predicting what a person will be interested in, including by using interactions from others who appear to have similar interests. A follower count is not the gate.

That is why a new account can reach a large audience with one video, and why a large account can post to nobody. It also means growth is not a prerequisite for results, which is the opposite of how most marketing budgets are argued for.

The practical consequence is that the content carries the strategy: each video is judged on what it is, not only on how many people follow the account that posted it.

Building a TikTok marketing strategy

A strategy here is shorter than the word suggests. Four decisions, written down, and the rest is production.

DecisionThe questionWhat a wrong answer looks like
AudienceWho specifically are you talking to?Everyone, which reaches nobody.
ThemesWhich four subjects will you own?Whatever is trending, which teaches the platform nothing.
FormatTalking to camera, showing the work, or photo posts? All of them at once, badly.
CadenceHow often can you keep this up for three months?Daily for two weeks, then silence.

For the format question, photo posts are covered in how to make a slideshow on TikTok; for cadence, how to schedule TikTok posts and the best time to post on TikTok cover the mechanics and the timing. Those four themes are the part most brands skip. An account that posts consistently on a few subjects becomes recognizable for them, both to people and to the system deciding what your videos are about.

Everything else in a strategy document, the mission statements and the tone of voice appendices, changes nothing about what gets filmed on Tuesday.

What brands get wrong on TikTok

A handful of mistakes are easy to make, and easy to spot once you know them:

  1. Reposting the ad. A polished commercial on TikTok reads as an advertisement instantly, and people scroll past advertisements.
  2. Posting for the brand instead of from a person. Videos with a face do work a logo cannot.
  3. Chasing trends that have nothing to do with the product. Views arrive, customers do not, and the account learns the wrong lesson.
  4. Treating it as a broadcast channel. Comments and messages are where the selling happens on this platform.
  5. Judging by views. Views are the cheapest number on the page, and the least connected to money.
  6. Stopping at week three. Almost every account that failed here simply stopped before it had enough videos to learn anything.

None of these is a creative problem. They are all decisions about how a business treats the channel, which is why they are fixable without a bigger budget.

The tools TikTok publishes for businesses

ToolWhat it is for
TikTok StudioUploading, scheduling, editing, analytics and comments, in the app and on the web.
Creator Search InsightsTopics people search for, with a Content gap filter and search analytics.
Ads ManagerCreating, managing and optimizing paid campaigns.
Business CenterManaging accounts, assets and people across a business.
TikTok ShopSelling products inside the app.
Creative Center and TikTok AcademyCreative references and training material.

Nearly all of it is free, and most businesses use one of the six.

Measuring TikTok marketing honestly

The numbers TikTok shows you and the numbers your business runs on are not the same list.

NumberWhat it tells youHow much weight to give it
ViewsHow many times a video started.Least. A view can be half a second.
Watch time and average watch timeWhether the video held anyone. The main editing signal.
Shares and savesSomeone passed it on or kept it.The strongest content signal.
Follows from a videoA stranger decided to keep watching you.The growth signal.
Search traffic to a postThe video is being found rather than served. The one that lasts.
Messages, orders and bookingsMoney.Most.

How a business should actually start

  1. Pick one of the four parts, based on whether you have time, money or a product.
  2. Write down ten questions your customers ask you and make a video for each.
  3. Post twice a week for eight weeks before judging anything.
  4. Read watch time and shares, not views.
  5. Only then add a second part, such as putting budget behind the videos that already worked.

That last order matters. Advertising a video nobody wanted organically is the most reliable way to spend money on TikTok and learn nothing.

If you would rather hand the whole loop to someone, that is what our TikTok marketing service covers, and the free social media audit will tell you which of the four parts fits your business before you spend anything.

How we will test this

Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.

This is the test we will run: we run each of these on our own accounts before recommending them: an organic posting schedule measured at thirty days, a small ads test through Ads Manager, and the tools listed above opened and recorded as they appear today.

Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next

What is TikTok marketing?

Using TikTok to reach and sell to customers, through four channels: organic posting, paid ads, creator partnerships and TikTok Shop.

Do I need followers for TikTok marketing to work?

No. TikTok recommends content by predicting interest, including from people with similar interests, so a follower count is not the gate.

How do TikTok ads work?

Create an Ads Manager account, define an objective, select an audience, set a budget, and choose the video. Objectives fall into Awareness, Consideration and Conversion.

How much do TikTok ads cost?

You set a bid and a daily spend. Typical costs vary by market, audience and objective, and the figures in circulation cannot be traced to a source.

Should a business still post organically on TikTok?

Yes. It costs consistency instead of budget, and it is also where you learn what to put money behind if you run ads later.

What should I post?

Start with the ten questions customers actually ask you. Each one is a video, and each one keeps being found through search.

What does TikTok use to decide who sees a video?

It names three main factors: user interactions, content information and user information, and says their importance can change over time.

Do I need TikTok Shop?

Only if you sell a physical product and have the capacity for listings, stock and fulfillment. It is operations work, not marketing work.

How long before TikTok marketing works?

Judge organic posting at eight weeks and thirty days per video. Anything shorter measures luck.

Should I advertise or post organically first?

Post first. Putting budget behind a video that nobody wanted organically is the most reliable way to spend money and learn nothing.

What is a TikTok Marketing Partner?

A company TikTok has badged through its own partner program, in one of four categories: agency, creative, measurement and marketing technology. TikTok says partners are evaluated before being listed. We are not one, and a badge is a supplier credential rather than a result, so treat it as a filter and not as proof.

What is TikTok affiliate marketing?

Creators earning a commission for sales they drive through TikTok Shop, rather than a flat fee for a post. It shifts the risk onto the creator, which is why it usually attracts smaller accounts than a paid partnership does, and why the product page matters more than the video.
