What Instagram search suggests, and why
Open Search and tap the search bar, and Instagram shows three kinds of suggestion:
- Recent searches, which Instagram saves so you can find favorite accounts and hashtags again quickly.
- Accounts that appear as you start typing.
- Suggested keywords, as you type and at the top of Search & Explore.
Only the first is a list you can clear. The other two are predictions. Meta's description of its search system names what goes into them: how closely your words match an account's username or name, how often you have visited that profile, your connections and theirs, and how often people in your country who typed the same thing went on to tap that result.
How to clear your recent searches
- Go to your profile and tap Menu in the top right.
- Below How you use Instagram, tap Your activity.
- Tap Recent searches.
- Tap Clear all, then Clear all again to confirm.
Instagram is moving accounts to Meta Account settings, and on some accounts the same control is there instead: Menu, Meta Account, Your information and permissions, Search history, then the account you want to clear. If you see that route, use it; if not, the steps above still work.
Removing a single search
To take out one search and keep the rest, open Search history through Meta Account, pick the account, and tap Remove next to the search.
Clearing search history on a computer
On instagram.com, click Search on the left. Click Remove next to a single search, or Clear all next to Recent. Accounts already on Meta Account settings can also go through More, Settings, Meta Account, Your information and permissions, Search history.
Why your search suggestions come back
Instagram is open about this: clearing your search history is temporary, and searches you clear can reappear after you search for them again. The suggestions you see while typing also do not live in that list. They come from your activity, so if you keep visiting a profile, it keeps being suggested.

Changing what search suggests
If clearing the list is not enough, three controls go further:
- Filter the results. After searching, tap Accounts, Audio, Tags, Places or Reels to see one kind of result instead of the mixed For you view.
- Non personalized results. Meta lists an option to see search results that are not personalized to you, available to some accounts.
- Reset suggested content. Under Content preferences, this clears the content Instagram suggests to you across the app. It cannot be undone; what it keeps is in how to reset your Instagram algorithm.
Clearing the app's cache is a different thing again: it deletes temporary files on the phone, not your search history, as how to clear cache on Instagram explains. How search fits with Feed, Explore and Reels is in what the Instagram algorithm means.
For a brand account
Read the search signals from the other side and they describe how a brand gets found. The match between what people type and your username or profile name is one of them, so a name people can spell, and a profile name that says what you do, help you appear as someone types. The other signal is what people do after they find you. If those who searched for your kind of business tap your profile and then follow or look around, Instagram has a reason to suggest you to the next person. The free social media audit checks what a visitor finds when they land.
How we will test this

This is the test we will run: we clear recent searches on a test account through both routes, on iPhone, Android and instagram.com, then search for the same accounts again and record which suggestions return and how soon.
Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.
