How to reset your Instagram algorithm

Instagram has a real reset button, and it does less than people hope. It wipes what you are suggested, keeps everything else, and starts learning again the moment you scroll.

Short answer

To reset your Instagram algorithm, go to your profile, tap Menu, then under What you see tap Content preferences, then Reset suggested content, and follow the steps. It clears the posts and reels Instagram suggests to you, so you see topics you would not normally see. It does not change who you follow, does not delete your data, and cannot be undone.

The steps to reset suggested content

Instagram calls the reset Reset suggested content. It sits in the app, on iPhone and Android:

  1. Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap Menu in the top right.
  3. Below What you see, tap Content preferences.
  4. Tap Reset suggested content.
  5. Tap Next and follow the instructions. You are offered a chance to review who you follow, and your ads topics if you see ads.
  6. Tap Reset suggested content to confirm.

Take the review step seriously. The reset leaves your follows alone, and the accounts you follow keep filling your feed, so this is the moment to unfollow the ones that pulled it in the wrong direction.

What a reset changes, and what it keeps

After a resetWhat happens
Suggested posts and reelsCleared, so you see topics you may not normally see.
Who you followUnchanged, unless you unfollow during the review step.
The ads you seeUnchanged.
Your dataNot deleted. Instagram still uses it to personalize in other ways and for ads.
Going backNot possible. The reset cannot be undone.

The last row is the one to think about. If your suggestions are mostly fine and one topic has taken over, a full reset throws away the good along with the bad. The gentler tools below may be all you need.

What happens after the reset

The reset is a fresh start, not a lock. Suggestions become personalized again as you like, share and engage with content. So the first days decide what the new version looks like:

  • Engage on purpose. Like and share what you want more of, and do not linger on what you do not.
  • Tell it no. On a suggested post you do not want, tap Options, then Not interested.
  • Watch your follows. The accounts you follow shape your feed whatever the reset did.

How the feed weighs those signals is set out in what Instagram feed means, and what each part of the app predicts in what the Instagram algorithm means.

Tune your algorithm instead of resetting it

Instagram is testing a softer control called Tune your algorithm. It shows the interests that are shaping your suggestions and lets you add topics you want more or less of. It is still in testing and may not be available to everyone, so you may not have it yet.

  1. Open Reels or Explore, or go to Settings, then Content preferences.
  2. Tap the icon in the corner of Reels or Explore.
  3. Under What you want to see more of, tap Add and type an interest.
  4. Under What you want to see less of, tap Add and type an interest.

Changes apply to Feed, Reels and Explore together; Instagram calls it one unified system, so there is no need to adjust each one. Tap an existing interest to remove it or to see why it is there. Posts suggested from an interest carry a label, such as From Running, which you can tap to adjust.

Fixing one kind of post without a full reset

When the problem is a single account, a word or a stretch of time, the options on the post itself are faster. Tap Options above a suggested post, then Not interested, and you can go further:

  • Don't suggest posts from that account.
  • Don't suggest posts with certain words, for a topic you want gone.
  • Snooze all suggested posts in your feed for 30 days.
  • This post made me uncomfortable, for content that is more than just uninteresting.

Clearing the cache is sometimes offered as a reset, and it is a different thing: it deletes temporary files on your phone, as how to clear cache on Instagram explains, and it is not the reset Instagram describes. Recent searches are cleared separately too, as how to reset Instagram search suggestions shows.

Which tool to use

ToolWhat it doesUse it when
Reset suggested contentClears your suggestions; cannot be undone. Most of what you are shown is wrong.
Tune your algorithmAdds or removes interests across Feed, Reels and Explore. You know which topics you want more or less of.
Not interestedFeeds back on one suggested post. One post or account is off.
SnoozePauses suggested posts in your feed for 30 days. You only want to see accounts you follow for a while.

Does resetting help your own reach?

Nothing Instagram publishes says so. The reset is described entirely in terms of what you are shown, and the page says nothing about how your posts are distributed to other people. If your reach has dropped, the answer lies in your posts and in who sees them, which what accounts reached means and how Reels views are counted help you read.

For a brand account

Suggestions follow your activity, so if you browse competitors and your industry from the brand's account, that is what it will suggest. A reset on that account is harmless, since it does not touch who the brand follows. Two habits help more than resetting, though:

  • Use Tune your algorithm, if you have it, to keep your field in view without being buried in it.
  • Judge the account by its numbers, not your feed. What the brand sees says little about what its audience sees.

If the numbers are the worry, the free social media audit reads the account post by post.

How we will test this

Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.

This is the test we will run: we reset suggested content on a test account after a week of steering it toward one topic, and record what Feed, Reels and Explore show over the following days, along with which accounts the review step lists.

Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Can I undo a reset?

No. Resetting your suggested content cannot be undone, though suggestions become personalized again as you use the app.

Does resetting unfollow anyone?

No. It does not change who you follow, but you are offered a chance to review and unfollow accounts before you confirm.

Does resetting delete my data?

No. Your data is kept, and Instagram still uses it to personalize your experience in other ways and to show ads.

No. The reset does not change the ads you see. You can review your ads topics during the steps.

Where is Reset suggested content?

Profile, Menu, then under What you see, Content preferences.

How long does a reset last?

Until you start engaging again. Instagram says suggestions become more personalized as you like, share and interact.

What is Tune your algorithm?

Why don't I have Tune your algorithm?

It is still in testing and may not be available to everyone.

How do I stop suggested posts for a while?

Tap Options above a suggested post, then Not interested, then Snooze, which pauses suggested posts in your feed for 30 days.
