First, find the Stories Archive
Every story you share is saved to your Stories Archive when its 24 hours end, unless you turned that off, and only you can see it there. To open it:
- Tap your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
- Tap the menu in the top right.
- Under "How you use Instagram", tap Archive.
The archive opens on stories. A switch at the top moves between the stories archive and the posts archive, which matters further down. How the 24 hours and the archive fit together is set out in how long Instagram stories last.
Three ways to bring a story back
A story cannot return to the moment it was posted, because that moment has passed. What people mean by unarchiving a story is one of three things.
1. Post it again as a story
- Open Archive and tap the story.
- Tap Share at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap Your story, then follow the steps on screen.
It is published as a new story, with a new 24 hours and a new viewer list. From the same Share step you can send it to particular people in a message instead. Reposting a story someone else posted, or one you were tagged in, works differently; see how to repost a story on Instagram.
2. Put it on your profile as a highlight
- On your profile, tap New, or Story highlight.
- Select the archived story or stories, then tap Next.
- Tap Edit cover to choose a cover and a name, then tap Add.
This comes closest to a real unarchive: the story is visible again, and it stays. Everyone who was allowed to see your stories can see the highlight, and who can see highlight viewers explains which of those views you will know about.
3. Save it to your phone
- Open Archive and select the story.
- Tap Options in the bottom right.
- Tap Save photo or Save video.
How to unarchive a post
If what you archived was a post, a carousel or a Reel from your grid, there is a true unarchive, called Show on profile:
- Go to your profile, tap the menu, then tap Archive.
- Tap Stories archive at the top, then choose Posts archive.
- Tap the post you want back.
- Tap Options in the top right, then Show on profile.
The post returns to its original spot on your profile, among the posts it was published between.
Archived stories and archived posts are not the same thing
| What | Archived story | Archived post |
|---|---|---|
| How it got there | Automatically, after 24 hours. Or by tapping Options, then Archive, on a live story. | Only if you archived it yourself. |
| Who can see it | Only you. | Only you. |
| Bring it back | Share as a new story, or add to a highlight. | Show on profile. It returns to its original spot. |
| Where in the archive | Stories archive, the default view. | Posts archive, through the switch at the top. |
| If you delete it from the archive | It is also removed from any highlight that used it. | It goes to Recently deleted. |
When the story is not in the archive
These are the documented reasons, most common first:
- Stories Archive was turned off. Stories posted while "Save story to archive" was off were never saved, and turning it on again only affects new stories.
- The story was deleted, not archived. Look in Recently deleted: Profile, menu, Your activity, Recently deleted, then Stories. Tap the story, tap Options, then Restore.
- The time ran out. Content leaves Recently deleted after 30 days, or after up to 24 hours for a story that was not in your Stories Archive, and then it cannot be restored.
- The account does not have the feature. Stories Archive and Highlights are not available on every account.
- The app is out of date. Recently deleted content needs the latest version of the app.
Why an archived story looks different
You open a story from two years ago and the song is gone. That is documented behavior: to manage storage, Instagram may change some stories when it saves them to the archive, muting music or freezing videos and GIFs. A photo story with a music sticker, for example, stays in the archive, but the sticker no longer plays.
These changes are permanent, and a story reshared from the archive does not get back what was removed. Stories made of original video that was not shared to Feed or Reels are not affected. If a story matters to you as it was, sound included, save it to your phone while it is still live.
Archive settings to check
- Go to your profile, tap the menu, then Your activity.
- Tap Archived.
- Tap Options in the top right, then Settings.
- Check the switch next to "Save story to archive".
Leave it on unless you have a reason not to. One more line in the Help Center is easy to miss: archived stories that you shared publicly are used to improve AI at Meta, unless you delete them or make the account private.
For a business account the archive is a library. Old stories about how a product is made, a restock or a customer question are raw material for highlights, and for new stories that reuse an idea; Instagram story ideas has formats built to be repeated, and scheduling a story lets a reshare go out at the right hour. Rebuilding highlights from the archive is one of the first jobs in our Instagram management.
How we will test this
Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.
This is the test we will run: we post stories from our own test accounts on iPhone and Android, let them expire, and then reshare one, add one to a highlight, save one and delete one. We also archive a post and show it on the profile again, and note what returns with it.
Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next
How do I unarchive a story on Instagram?+
Open Archive from the menu on your profile, tap the story, tap Share and choose Your story. It is posted as a new story. To keep it visible for longer, add it to a highlight from your profile.
Can I put an archived story back where it was?+
No. A story's 24 hours cannot be restarted in place. Sharing it again creates a new story with a new viewer list. Only posts return to their original spot, through Show on profile.
Where is the Stories Archive on Instagram?+
Profile, the menu in the top right, then Archive under "How you use Instagram". It opens on stories, and a switch at the top leads to the posts archive.
How do I unarchive a post on Instagram?+
Open Archive, switch from Stories archive to Posts archive, tap the post, tap Options and choose Show on profile. The post returns to its original spot.
Can other people see my archived stories?+
No. Archived stories cannot be seen by anyone unless you share them. Adding one to a highlight or sharing it again makes it visible.
Why can't I find my old story in the archive?+
Most often because saving to the archive was switched off when it was posted, or because the story was deleted. Check Recently deleted under Your activity, where a story can be restored for a limited time.
How long do deleted stories stay in Recently deleted?+
Content is removed from there after 30 days, or after up to 24 hours for stories that were not in your Stories Archive.
Why is the music missing from my archived story?+
Instagram may mute music or freeze GIFs on some stories when saving them to the archive, to manage storage. The change is permanent.
Does deleting a story from the archive remove it from highlights?+
Yes. A story deleted from your archive is also removed from the other places you shared it, highlights included.
Does resharing an archived story notify my followers?+
It appears in the stories row like any new story. The Help Center does not describe any extra notification for a reshared story.
Can I unarchive a story while it is still active?+
A story only reaches the archive after its 24 hours are up, so there is nothing to unarchive while it is live. Within those 24 hours the story is already on your profile, and the thing to do is add it to a highlight.
Can I bring a story back within 24 hours of it ending?+
Yes, and the viewer list is the reason to be quick. The list of who watched lasts 48 hours from posting, so a story reshared after that starts a new story with a new list, and the names on the first one are gone.
