Can you schedule a story on Instagram?

Yes, in two places: the Instagram app, for accounts that meet Instagram's eligibility rules, and Meta Business Suite, Meta's free tool for business accounts.

Short answer

Yes. In the Instagram app, tap the three dot More options menu before sharing the story, then Schedule; the option is for accounts that meet Instagram's eligibility requirements. Meta Business Suite also schedules stories, on a computer or in its own mobile app, for any account connected to it.

Where a story can be scheduled

There are two official ways. The Instagram app has a schedule option for stories on eligible accounts, and Meta Business Suite schedules stories for any account connected to it. The desktop steps, including what the editor can and cannot do, are in how to add a story on Instagram from a PC.

ToolStoriesPosts and ReelsWho can use it

Meta Business Suite on a computerYesYes.People with full control or content permission for the account.
Meta Business Suite mobile appYesYes.People with at least partial access who are assigned to the account.

Two official pages draw the line in different places. The Help Center article on scheduling lists only Reels, photos and carousel posts. Instagram's own guide to Stories, on its About site, describes a Schedule option for stories and says it is for accounts that meet the eligibility requirements, without listing them. If you cannot find the option, your account may not have it yet, and Business Suite works either way. Posts and Reels follow the rules in how to schedule Instagram posts.

How to schedule a story in the Instagram app

  1. Open the Stories camera and create your story as usual.
  2. Before sharing, tap the three dot More options menu.
  3. Tap Schedule, choose the date and time, and confirm.

The story then sits in your scheduled content list and is posted automatically at the time you chose. For posts and Reels, the same list is under Scheduled content in the profile menu.

How to schedule an Instagram story on a computer

On a computer, stories are scheduled in Meta Business Suite, which needs the Instagram account connected to it; how to link Facebook to Instagram covers that connection. Then:

  1. Open Meta Business Suite and click Create story, from the home page or the Content tab.
  2. Under Post to, choose your Instagram profile. You can add your Facebook Page and post to both at once.
  3. Under Media, click Add photo/video. You can upload up to 10 photos or videos, or drag them in.
  4. Click Edit on each one to crop it, trim a video, and add text, mentions or stickers. Click Add link to put a link on the story.
  5. Under Scheduling options, choose Schedule, then pick the date and time.
  6. Click Schedule.

How to schedule an Instagram story on a phone

If the option is missing in Instagram, the Business Suite mobile app is the other route. It is a separate app, and its mobile experience may not be available to everyone yet.

  1. Open the Meta Business Suite app and tap Content in the bottom menu.
  2. Choose Stories at the top, then tap Create.
  3. The first time, allow Business Suite to access your photos and videos.
  4. Add your media and any text, then tap Next.
  5. Tap Schedule for later, choose the date and time, and tap Schedule.

Scheduled stories show up in Planner, alongside everything else planned for the week or the month.

How to change or delete a scheduled story

  1. In Business Suite on a computer, click Content in the left menu, then the Stories tab.
  2. Choose Scheduled.
  3. Select the story and click the three dot menu.
  4. Choose to publish it now, reschedule it or delete it.

Once a story has gone out, the same tab lists it under Active, and later under Archived, where its insights are. Past the 24 hours it also lands in your Instagram archive, and how to unarchive a story explains what you can do with it from there.

What to check before you schedule a story

  • The account is connected, and you have full control or content permission for it.
  • The editor is smaller. Business Suite's story editor offers cropping, trimming, text, mentions, stickers and a link. Anything that only the Instagram camera offers has to be made there, which means posting that story from the app.
  • The link. Add link puts a link on the story, which is often the reason to schedule a sales story in the first place.
  • The time. Check the date and time on the confirmation before you leave the screen, especially if your audience is in another time zone.
  • Twenty four hours. A scheduled story still lasts a day from the moment it goes out; how long Instagram stories last covers highlights and the viewer list.

Third party schedulers

Many social media tools advertise story scheduling for Instagram, and how it works varies by tool and plan. Some publish the story directly. Others send a reminder to your phone at the chosen time, and you post it yourself.

Before paying for one, ask which of the two it does for stories, and whether stickers and links survive. For a single account, Business Suite does the job without a subscription.

Should a business schedule stories at all?

Scheduling suits the parts of a story plan that are fixed in advance: a launch countdown, holiday opening hours, the weekly offer. It suits the live parts badly. Stories work because they feel current, and a poll or a question box needs someone watching the replies as they arrive.

A workable split is to schedule the planned frames early in the week, at the hours your audience is on (the best time to post on Instagram covers how to find them), and post the rest by hand. Instagram story ideas has formats that suit each half. A weekly story rhythm, with the planned part scheduled and the live part handled by a person, is part of our Instagram management.

How we will test this

Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.

This is the test we will run: we schedule stories from the Instagram app on each of our test accounts where the option exists, and from Meta Business Suite on the desktop site and in its mobile app.

Each test uses a photo, a video, a link and stickers. We record what is published, when, and what is missing compared with a story made in the Instagram app.

Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.
