Why instagram.com cannot post a story
Instagram's help page on sharing a story is blunt about computers: the feature is not available on them. It lists four places it does work, the Instagram apps for Android, iPhone and iPad, and Instagram Lite. A web browser is not on the list, whether on a computer or on a phone.
That leaves one official route on a PC or Mac, which is Meta's own tool for businesses.
Meta Business Suite: the desktop route
Meta Business Suite is a free tool for small businesses and creators to manage their Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp presence in one place. It works through a business portfolio, which holds assets such as a Facebook Page and an Instagram account, and the people allowed to manage them.
To post a story to an Instagram account there, you need either full control of that account or content permission for it. If your Instagram account is not yet connected to Meta's business tools, how to link Facebook to Instagram covers the connection.
How to add an Instagram story from a computer
- Open Meta Business Suite in your browser.
- Click Create story, on the home page or in the Content tab.
- Under Post to, choose your Instagram profile. You can choose your Facebook Page as well to post to both.
- Under Media, click Add photo/video, or drag files in. You can add up to 10.
- Click Edit on each item to adjust it, and Add link if you want viewers to visit a page.
- Under Scheduling options, pick Share now or Schedule, then click Share or Schedule.
What you can edit on a computer
The desktop editor is simpler than the app's. For each photo or video you can crop the aspect ratio, trim the length of a video, add text, add mentions and add stickers, and attach a link. Music, effects and the camera itself stay in the app. A story that depends on those is still a phone job; a designed graphic or a finished video made on the computer suits the desktop route well.

Scheduling and managing stories on desktop
Scheduling is the real reason to use the desktop route. Pick Schedule, set a date and time, and the story goes out without you. Afterwards, open the Content tab and then Stories, where they sort into Active, Scheduled and Archived. The menu on each one lets you publish, reschedule or delete it, and opening a published or archived story shows its insights.

If you have a personal account
Meta Business Suite manages accounts held in a business portfolio, so it is built for business and creator accounts. If yours is a personal account and you want to post stories from a computer, you have two honest options: switch to a professional account and connect it, or prepare the story on the computer and send it to your phone to post from the app.
Apps and browser tricks that claim to post stories from a computer without Meta's tools ask for your Instagram login, which is a risk to the account. We do not recommend them.

For a brand account
For a team, the desktop route turns stories into planned content rather than something done on someone's phone. Design the week's stories on a computer, load them into Business Suite, schedule them, and leave the app for the moments that need music, effects or a live reply.
