How to use YouTube chapters.

Three rules decide whether your timestamps become chapters or stay a list of numbers nobody clicks. YouTube publishes all three.

Short answer

Add a list of timestamps and titles to the video description in YouTube Studio. The first timestamp must be 00:00, there must be at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.

What YouTube chapters are

Chapters break a video into sections, each with its own preview. On the player they turn the progress bar into labeled segments; in the description they are the list of timestamps you wrote; and they can appear in the transcript too. Their job is to let a viewer find, or rewatch, one part without hunting for it.

There are two kinds: the ones you write, and automatic ones YouTube generates. When you write your own, they override the automatic ones.

The three rules that make chapters work

Most chapter problems come from breaking one of these:

RuleWhat YouTube requiresWhat happens if you break it
Start at zeroThe first timestamp must be 00:00.Nothing becomes a chapter. This is the most common mistake.
At least threeThree timestamps, listed in ascending order. Two timestamps stay plain text.
Ten seconds minimumEach chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.A shorter chapter breaks the set.

One requirement sits before all three: if your channel does not have access to chapters yet, you apply for access to Advanced features first.

Adding your own chapters

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio.
  2. Select Content in the left menu.
  3. Click the video you want to edit.
  4. In the Description, add your list of timestamps and titles.
  5. Check that the first one is 00:00, that there are at least three, and that each section runs at least 10 seconds.
  6. Click Save.

Each line is a timestamp, a space, then a title. A list like this:

LineWhat it becomes
00:00 What this coversThe opening chapter. Required.
00:42 The setupSecond chapter.
02:15 The mistake most people makeThird chapter, the minimum that turns the feature on.
05:30 What to do insteadFourth, optional.

On an eight minute video, those four lines divide the progress bar like this:

An example eight minute progress bar split into four chapters: 0:00 to 0:42, 0:42 to 2:15, 2:15 to 5:30, and 5:30 to 8:00. 00:0000:4202:1505:3008:00 What this covers The mistake most people make What to do instead The setup
An example, not a real video: each timestamp starts a segment that runs to the next one.

Saving the list overrides the automatic chapters for that video.

Automatic chapters, and how to switch them off

YouTube generates chapters by itself when it can. The option is on by default for new uploads and can be changed per video or for all of them:

  • To allow them on one video, open the video in Studio, click Show more, and select Allow automatic chapters under Automatic Chapters.
  • To opt out on one video, uncheck the same box.
  • To opt out everywhere, go to Settings, Upload defaults, Advanced settings, and uncheck the option to allow automatic chapters.

Not every video is eligible, and not every eligible video gets them. The feature is also unavailable when the channel has active strikes or the content may be inappropriate for some viewers.

For a brand channel, write your own. Automatic chapters describe what the video contains; yours can describe what the viewer gets.

Writing chapter titles people click

A chapter title is a very short headline, read at the moment someone is deciding whether to stay:

  1. Say the outcome, not the section. "How to fix the leak" beats "Part two".
  2. Keep them short. They are read at a glance on a progress bar.
  3. Use the words people search for, since the description is text YouTube reads.
  4. Avoid "Intro" as the first chapter. It tells the viewer to skip your opening.
  5. Make the last one an answer, not "Outro", so the end of the video still promises something.

When chapters do not appear

What you seeLikely reasonFix
Timestamps show as plain textThe first one is not 00:00.Add a 00:00 line at the top of the list.
Only two timestampsBelow the minimum of three.Add a third in ascending order.
One section is ignoredIt is shorter than 10 seconds.Merge it with the section next to it.
The bar is not segmentedThe change has not saved, or the player is cached.Save in Studio, then reload the watch page.
No chapter option at allThe channel may not have access yet.Apply for access to Advanced features.
Automatic chapters missingNot every video is eligible, and strikes or sensitive content turn the feature off.Write your own chapters instead.

What chapters do and do not do for search

Chapters put your own words into the description in a structured way, and YouTube reads that text, so a chapter titled with the phrase people search for helps the video match it. The same principle runs through social media SEO on every platform: say the words people search for, where the platform reads them.

YouTube does not publish that chapters raise watch time or views, and no number on that should be trusted without a source. The case for them is simpler: a viewer who can find the part they came for stays, and a viewer who wants to rewatch one step comes back to your video instead of searching again.

When a business should use chapters, and when not

VideoChapters?Why
A tutorial or a how toYes.People come for one step and want to find it.
A long interview or podcastYes.Chapters are the table of contents that makes an hour navigable.
A product walkthroughYes.Buyers skip to the feature they care about.
A short under a minuteNo.There is nothing to navigate, and the 10 second minimum leaves no room.
A story or a filmUsually not.Chapters invite skipping, which works against the video.

When the video goes out matters too: the best time to post on YouTube covers what the published studies agree on, and YouTube upload time in India shows how to read your own audience's hours. Channel art and thumbnail sizes are in social media post sizes. Structuring longer video is part of how we plan content in social media management, and the free social media audit looks at whether your longer videos can be found at all.

How we will test this

Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.

This is the test we will run: we add chapters to videos on our own channel: a correct set, a set starting at 00:12, a set with two timestamps, and one with an eight second section. We record what YouTube renders in each case, and what the description looks like afterwards.

Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next

How do I add chapters to a YouTube video?

In YouTube Studio, open the video and add a list of timestamps and titles to the description, starting at 00:00, then save.

Why are my YouTube chapters not working?

Most often the first timestamp is not 00:00. There must also be at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.

How many chapters does a video need?

At least three timestamps. YouTube publishes no maximum.

How short can a chapter be?

10 seconds is the minimum length.

Do chapters have to be in order?

Yes. The timestamps must be listed in ascending order.

What are automatic chapters?

Chapters YouTube generates itself. The option is on by default for new uploads and can be turned off per video or in Upload defaults.

Do my chapters replace the automatic ones?

Yes. Adding your own overrides automatic chapters for that video.

Why can I not see the chapters option?

If your channel does not have access to chapters yet, apply for access to Advanced features.

Why did a video get no automatic chapters?

Not all videos are eligible, and the feature is unavailable when the channel has active strikes or the content may be inappropriate for some viewers.

Do chapters improve views or watch time?

YouTube does not publish that they do. The real benefit is that a viewer can find and rewatch the part they came for.
