Who gets Instagram Insights
Any public account. Instagram's current pages say a public personal account has insights just as a professional account does, so you do not have to switch to a business or creator account to see your numbers. An older troubleshooting page still describes insights as something you get after converting to a business or creator account, so if you are on a personal account and see nothing, that page may describe your app.
A private account loses access. If you switch back to public within 90 days, the past data comes back. If you have only just made the account public, older insights may not appear.
Where to find your analytics
In the app:
- Tap Profile or your profile picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Professional dashboard, or Your dashboard on a personal account.
- If neither is there, tap More, then Insights below For professionals, or Your dashboard below Your insights and tools.
The first screen shows the past 30 days for Views, Interactions, New followers and Content you shared.
On a computer:
- On instagram.com, select Dashboard in the left menu.
- Select Insights below For professionals, or Your dashboard below Your insights and tools.
- In the Insights dropdown, pick Account or Content, then set the date range.
What each Instagram metric counts
The names have changed, and the old ones still fill most articles. These are the definitions in the Help Center now:
| Metric | What it counts |
|---|---|
| Views | The times your content was played or displayed, across reels, posts, stories, live videos and ads. Repeat views count. |
| Viewers | Unique accounts that saw your content on screen at least once. |
| Interactions | Actions such as likes, comments, saves and shares; on stories, replies, sticker taps and link taps. |
| Accounts engaged | Unique accounts that interacted with your content. |
| Profile activity | What people did on your profile after seeing the content, such as visits, follows or website taps. |
| Watch time | For reels: the total time the reel played, replays included. |
| Average watch time | For reels: watch time divided by the number of first plays. |
| Follows | For reels: accounts that followed you as a result of watching. |
Viewers is the number that replaced accounts reached, and the gap between it and Views is where most confusion starts. Both are explained in full in what accounts reached means and how Reels views are counted. Instagram also notes that some of these metrics are estimated and still in development.
Analytics for one post, reel or story
- A post or reel: open it from your profile and tap View Insights below it.
- A live story: open your story, tap Activity, then Insights.
- An expired story: open your dashboard, tap Content you shared, then the story. The story itself is gone after 24 hours, but its numbers stay.
Insights for posts, reels and stories are kept for up to two years after they are published. Reels posted before May 14, 2021 have none. Content you shared also opens a library of everything you have posted, which you can filter by format, reach, interactions and date, and that list is the quickest way to compare posts side by side. New numbers can be delayed while they fill in, so give a fresh post time before you judge it.
Date ranges: the 90 day window
Account insights cover any period within the past 90 days. There are five presets, Last 7 days, Last 14 days, Last 30 days, Previous month and Last 90 days, and a custom range whose start and end have to be at least a day apart. Nothing older than 90 days is shown at account level.
That window is the practical reason to keep your own record. If you want to compare this quarter with the same one last year, the account view will not show it; a monthly note of the main numbers will.
Audience demographics
Viewers and Accounts engaged can be broken down by top countries, cities, age ranges and gender. Two conditions apply: you must use a preset timeframe, not a custom one, and you need to reach or engage more than 100 viewers in it. If the last 7 days show nothing, choose Last 30 days or Last 90 days.
Why your insights are missing
| What you see | Likely reason |
|---|---|
| No dashboard at all | The account is private, or your app still ties insights to a professional account. |
| No older numbers | The account was made public, or switched to professional, only recently. |
| No demographics | A custom range, or 100 viewers or fewer in the range. |
| No numbers on an old reel | It was posted before May 14, 2021, or more than two years ago. |
| Numbers that look low on a new post | They are still filling in. |
What to read first
The dashboard opens on Views, which is the biggest number and the least useful one on its own. A better order:
- Viewers, to know how many people actually saw your work.
- Interactions per post, saves and shares above likes, to know which posts did something.
- Profile activity and Follows, to know which posts turned viewers into visitors or followers.
- Average watch time on reels, to know where people stopped watching.
Compare posts with each other, not with numbers from other accounts. If you want a second pair of eyes on what your numbers are saying, the free social media audit reads them post by post. For what to post next once you know, the best time to post on Instagram is a reasonable place to start.
How we will test this
Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.
This is the test we will run: we open Insights on a personal and a professional test account, on a phone and on instagram.com, and record which screens each one shows, how long a new post takes to fill in, and what the content library filters offer.
Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next
What are Instagram analytics called?+
Insights. They are Instagram's own free analytics for your account and each piece of content.
Do I need a business account to see Instagram analytics?+
Not according to Instagram's current pages: any public account, personal or professional, has insights. An older troubleshooting page still ties them to business and creator accounts.
Where are Instagram analytics in the app?+
Go to your profile and tap Professional dashboard, or Your dashboard on a personal account. If neither shows, tap More and find Insights or Your dashboard there.
Can I see Instagram analytics on a computer?+
Yes. On instagram.com, select Dashboard in the left menu, then Insights or Your dashboard, and choose Account or Content.
How far back do Instagram analytics go?+
Account insights cover any period within the past 90 days. Insights for single posts, reels and stories are kept for up to two years.
Can I see analytics for an old story?+
Yes, for up to two years. Open your dashboard, tap Content you shared and choose the story, even though the story itself has expired.
What is the difference between views and viewers?+
Views counts every time content was played or displayed, repeats included. Viewers counts unique accounts that saw it at least once.
Why can't I see my audience demographics?+
Demographics need a preset timeframe and more than 100 viewers or engaged accounts in it. Try Last 30 days or Last 90 days.
Why did my insights disappear?+
One documented cause is switching the account to private. Switch back to public within 90 days and the past data returns.
Are Instagram analytics exact?+
Not entirely. Instagram says some metrics are estimated and in development, and new numbers can be delayed while they populate.
What happened to accounts reached and impressions?+
Instagram's metric pages now use Views and Viewers instead; Viewers is the closest match to accounts reached.
