Instagram has no italic button
None of Instagram's help pages on captions, editing captions, story text or bios describes italic, bold or any other text formatting. What you type is plain text. So when you see a caption with a word in italics, the person did not format it; they used different characters.
How italic text on Instagram actually works
Unicode, the standard that defines every character your phone can show, includes a block called Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols. It holds letters in fixed styles, italic, bold italic, sans serif italic and more, encoded as separate characters so that mathematicians can tell variables apart. 𝑥 in an equation is a different symbol from x.
Because they are separate characters, they survive anywhere plain text goes, including an Instagram caption. That is the whole trick. It also explains one oddity: the italic small h is missing from that block. Unicode already had it as ℎ, the Planck constant sign, so the italic alphabet borrows that character, and a hole was left where h would be.

Copy the letters you need, letter by letter, or use a converter that swaps them for you. There are no italic digits or punctuation in these sets, so numbers and commas stay as they are. How the letters look depends on the fonts on each viewer's phone; Unicode itself notes that glyphs vary between fonts.
Typing italic letters faster
- A converter site. Type a phrase, copy the italic version, paste it into Instagram. Check that the h came through as ℎ, since it is the one italic letter from a different part of Unicode.
- Your phone's text replacement. If you use the same italic word often, such as a product name in a tagline, save it as a shortcut in your keyboard settings so a short code expands into it.
- A notes draft. Write the caption in a notes app, paste the italic words in, then paste the finished caption into Instagram, so nothing is lost if the app closes.
Instagram drafts help here too: a post you are still styling can wait in Drafts, as covered in how to post on Instagram.
Where italic characters show up
Anywhere you can type text: captions, comments, your bio and story text. Since they are characters rather than formatting, they look the same to everyone, as long as their phone has a font that includes them.
A caption is the natural place for one italic word: a title, a term, a quiet emphasis. Before you style anything, settle what the caption says; prompts for Instagram posts helps with the words themselves.
The costs of italic letters
Unicode is direct about these characters. The Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols are intended for mathematical or technical notation, not for nontechnical text, and should not be used to represent styling. That warning has practical sides:
| What can go wrong | Why |
|---|---|
| Search may not match | An italic letter is a different character from the plain one. Each has a mapping back to the plain letter, but nothing obliges an app to use it when people search. |
| Screen readers may stumble | Software that reads text aloud may announce the characters as mathematical symbols or skip them, depending on the reader. |
| Some phones may show boxes | A device without a font that covers the block cannot draw them. |
| Hashtags and handles break | A tag or a username has to be typed in plain characters to work as one. |
So keep anything people need to find in plain text: your business name, product names, keywords and hashtags. How search reads a caption is part of Instagram hashtags for Reels.
Other ways to add emphasis
- Line breaks. A short line on its own carries more weight than any style.
- Word order. Put the word that matters at the start or end of the sentence.
- The image. On a carousel or a story, put the emphasis in the design, where you control the type completely.
- Capitals, sparingly. One capitalized word reads as emphasis; a capitalized sentence reads as shouting.
For a brand account
For a brand, italics are a styling choice with an accessibility cost, so set a rule once: at most one italic word in a caption, never in names, prices or anything a customer might search for. If your visual identity depends on italic type, carry it in the images and story designs instead, where it costs nothing.
If you would like someone to own the captions and the look of the account, the Instagram management service does both.
How we will test this
Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.
This is the test we will run: we post captions with italic, bold italic and sans serif italic words from a test account, then search for those words, read the captions with VoiceOver and TalkBack, and view them on older Android and iPhone models, recording what each one shows and says.
Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next
Can you write in italics on Instagram?+
Not with formatting. Instagram has no italic option, but you can paste Unicode characters that look like italic letters.
How do I make italic text on Instagram?+
Copy italic letters from an alphabet or a converter and paste them into your caption, comment or bio.
Why is the italic h different?+
Unicode already had an italic h as the Planck constant sign, ℎ, so the italic alphabet uses that character and leaves a gap where h would be.
Do italic letters work in my Instagram bio?+
They are ordinary characters, so they can be typed anywhere text goes, bio included. Keep your name and keywords plain so people can find you.
Will people find my post if I use italics?+
Possibly not for the italic words. They are different characters from the plain letters, so keep anything searchable in plain text.
Are italic fonts on Instagram bad for accessibility?+
They can be. Unicode says these characters are for mathematics, and screen readers may read them as symbols or skip them.
Can I use italics in hashtags?+
Do not. A hashtag has to be written in plain characters to work as a tag.
Is there bold text on Instagram?+
Not as formatting either. Bold styles exist in the same Unicode block and carry the same trade offs.
Why do some people see boxes instead of my italic text?+
Their device lacks a font that includes those characters, so it cannot draw them.
Do italic letters include numbers?+
Not in these italic sets. Digits and punctuation stay as they are.
Can I make italics in Instagram story text?+
The help pages describe no italic option for story text. Pasted italic characters work as text; for a styled look, design the story as an image.
