Does Instagram notify when you screenshot?

Almost never. The exception is anything in a chat that was sent to disappear, and there the sender is told.

Short answer

Instagram does not notify anyone when you screenshot a story, a post, a reel or a normal chat. It does notify the sender when you screenshot or screen record something sent to disappear in a chat: a view once photo or video, a disappearing message, or anything in vanish mode.

The answer, format by format

The rule is simple once you see it laid out. Instagram treats content that is meant to disappear differently from everything else. If the sender chose for it to disappear, a screenshot is reported to them. If not, it is silent.

That gives three cases where Instagram does notify, all of them inside direct messages, and a long list where it does not.

What you screenshotNotifies? What the other person seesNotes
StoryNoNothing. You appear in the viewer list like anyone else who watched.Instagram tested story screenshot alerts from February to June 2018 and dropped them.
HighlightNoNothing.A highlight is a saved story and behaves like one.
Feed post or carouselNoNothing.Saves and shares are not visible by name either.
ReelNoNothing. The view counts, the screenshot does not.
Normal DMNoNothing, for text, links, voice notes and regular photos.Applies to group chats too.
Disappearing photo or video in a DMYesA dotted circle next to the message in the chat.Sent with the camera inside the chat, set to view once or allow replay.
Disappearing messages, on a timerYesA notification that the message was captured.A chat setting. Messages vanish after the time the sender chose. Not available everywhere.
Anything in vanish modeYesA notification that a screenshot was taken.Covers text as well as media. Instagram says it may be unavailable in Japan and in European countries.
Profile, bio, follower listNoNothing.Instagram has no profile view log at all.
Live videoNoNothing. You do show up as a viewer while you watch.

The exception: content sent to disappear

Disappearing photos and videos

When someone opens the camera inside a chat and sends a photo or video, they pick how it behaves: view once, allow replay, or keep in chat. The first two are disappearing messages.

Screenshot one of those and the sender can see it. Instagram's Help Center describes the marker as a dotted circle next to the photo or video in the chat.

The sender cannot view the photo again, but they can see whether it was opened and whether it was captured. There is no setting that switches this off.

"Keep in chat" behaves like a normal photo. Nothing is reported, because nothing was meant to disappear.

Disappearing messages on a timer

Instagram also has a chat setting called disappearing messages. You swipe up inside a chat to turn it on, and messages then vanish after the time you chose. It works only in a chat between two Instagram accounts, not in groups.

If the other person takes a screenshot or a screen recording before a message disappears, Instagram says you receive a notification.

Vanish mode

Vanish mode is the older version of the same idea. Everything sent while it is on is erased when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off, and a screenshot triggers a notification to the other person.

You cannot copy, save or forward messages in it. If you ended up in it by accident, here is how to turn off vanish mode.

What Instagram itself says

Most articles on this question repeat each other. The Help Center pages are more precise, and three details in them matter:

  • "If we detect." Every one of Instagram's statements is worded that way: you are notified if Instagram detects a screenshot. It is a safeguard, not a guarantee. A capture the app does not detect is not reported.
  • A second device is invisible. Someone can take a photo of a disappearing message with a camera or another device before it disappears.
  • Its advice is about trust. The Help Center tells people to use vanish mode and disappearing messages only with people they trust. That is the honest summary of what these features can and cannot do.

Nothing in the Help Center describes a notification for screenshots of stories, posts, Reels, profiles or ordinary messages. Posts that announce "a new Instagram screenshot alert" go around every few months. Check the Help Center before believing one.

How to check whether someone screenshotted your DM

The steps are the same on iPhone and Android:

  1. Tap Messages at the bottom of the app.
  2. Open the conversation where you sent the disappearing photo or video.
  3. Read the status shown below the message. A dotted circle next to it means Instagram detected a screenshot.

There is no desktop version of this check: vanish mode is not available on computers, and disappearing photos are sent from the camera in the mobile app. How private messages work in general, and who can send them to you, is in what DM means.

Does screen recording get around it?

No. Instagram's Help Center names both: a screenshot or a screen recording of a disappearing message or of vanish mode can be detected and reported to the sender.

The only capture Instagram cannot see is a second device: another phone pointed at the screen. Remember that when you are the one sending. "View once" limits casual saving. It does not make a photo safe to send.

Apps that claim to show who screenshotted your story

They cannot. Instagram does not record story or post screenshots, so there is no data for any app to read. Apps that promise it either show you nothing useful or ask for your login, which is how accounts get taken over.

  • Do not enter your Instagram password into a third party app.
  • If you already did, change the password and turn on two factor authentication.
  • Check "Apps and websites" in settings and remove anything you do not recognize.

How other platforms handle screenshots

How we will test this

Not run yetEverything above is taken from the platform's own help pages, and each claim says which page it came from. Our own test on live accounts has not been run, so nothing here is presented as something we measured.

This is the test we will run: we use two of our own accounts, one on iPhone and one on Android, and send every format in the table from one to the other. Then we screenshot and screen record each one, and write down what the sender's phone shows.

Instagram changes behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and sooner when readers tell us something moved. This section will then say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a story?

No. The person sees you in the list of story viewers, the same as anyone who watched, but nothing marks a screenshot.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a DM?

Only for content sent to disappear: view once and allow replay photos and videos, disappearing messages on a timer, and anything in vanish mode. Screenshots of normal messages, photos kept in chat, voice notes and links are not reported.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a post or a reel?

No. Neither is reported, and neither is saving or sharing the post by name.

Does Instagram notify when you screen record a story?

No. Screen recording a story, a post, a reel or a live is not reported. Screen recording a disappearing DM is.

Can someone see that I screenshotted their profile?

No. Instagram does not log profile views or profile screenshots for personal, creator or business accounts.

Can I screenshot a view once photo without them knowing?

Do not count on it. Instagram reports screenshots and screen recordings it detects, and tricks such as airplane mode are unreliable. The better question is why: if someone chose view once, they did not want the photo kept.

What does the circle icon next to a DM mean?

Instagram's Help Center describes a dotted circle next to a disappearing photo or video you sent. It means Instagram detected that the other person took a screenshot of it.

Did Instagram ever notify for story screenshots?

Briefly. In February 2018 Instagram began testing a marker for story screenshots with a limited group of users. By June 2018 it had ended the test, as BuzzFeed News reported. It has not come back.

Does Instagram notify when you screenshot a highlight?

No. A highlight is a story saved to the profile, and screenshots of stories are not reported. The owner can see who viewed a highlight only for a limited time after it was posted as a story, which is a separate question covered in our guide to highlight views.

Is every screenshot of a disappearing message detected?

Instagram does not promise that. Its wording is that you are notified if it detects a screenshot. Treat the notification as a deterrent, and send nothing in a disappearing message that you could not bear to see saved.

Do business accounts see more than personal accounts?

Insights show counts of saves, shares and profile visits. They never show who took a screenshot, because Instagram does not collect that.

How do I stop people screenshotting my content?

You cannot. You can limit who sees it: a private account, Close Friends for stories, and view once for photos in DMs. Assume anything you post can be saved.
