The answer, surface by surface
Facebook and Messenger are one product to most people and two sets of rules in practice. This table follows Meta's own help pages.
| What you screenshot | Notifies? | What the other person sees | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| A post in the feed | No | Nothing. | Nothing in the Help Center describes a notification for post screenshots. |
| A Facebook story | No | Nothing. | You do appear in the story's viewer list, like anyone who watched. |
| A Reel or a video | No | Nothing. | The view is counted, the screenshot is not reported. |
| A profile, a photo, a comment | No | Nothing. | Facebook has no profile view log either. |
| A Marketplace listing or a group post | No | Nothing. | Same as any other post. |
| An end to end encrypted Messenger chat | Yes | A notice in the chat for everyone in it. | Only if Meta detects the capture. |
So the short version: on Facebook itself, screenshots are silent. The exception lives in Messenger, and only in chats that are end to end encrypted.
Photos, profile pictures and albums
Most people asking about Facebook screenshots mean photos. Screenshotting someone's profile picture, cover photo, tagged photos or an album sends no notification to them. Saving the photo to your phone does not either.
What Facebook does show its users is limited to the things they can act on: likes, comments, shares, tags, story views and friend requests. There is no screen in the app, for a profile or a Page, that lists who captured a photo.
That cuts both ways. Anything you can see on Facebook, other people can save, and photos travel further than the privacy setting they were posted under. If a photo would be a problem outside Facebook, the only real control is not posting it, or limiting the audience before you do.
The Messenger exception, in Meta's words
The Messenger Help Center puts it in one sentence: if Meta detects that someone took a screenshot or a screen recording of your end to end encrypted chat, you and the people in the chat will be notified.
Two details in that sentence matter.
- "If we detect." Meta adds that it may not be able to detect all screen recordings or screenshots. The notification is a deterrent, not a guarantee.
- "You and the people in the chat." The notice goes to everyone in the conversation, not only to the person whose message was captured.
Meta also lists what the feature cannot stop: someone can copy the text, forward a capture, or photograph the screen with another device before the message disappears.
Disappearing messages, and the timers around them
Inside an end to end encrypted chat you can set a timer so that messages disappear after they have been seen. Meta's page gives the rules.
| Rule | The rule |
|---|---|
| Where the setting lives | Open the chat, then Options, Privacy and support, Disappearing Messages, choose the timer, then Done. |
| Who controls it | Anyone in the chat can reset the timer. |
| Unread messages | A message that is not read within 14 days disappears from the chat automatically. |
| How long it stays on | Until someone turns the setting off or changes the timer. |
| Reporting | The conversation can be reported for up to 6 hours after a message disappears. |
| Availability | Being introduced gradually, so it may not be in your app yet. Update Messenger first. |
Disappearing messages are not the same as sending media that can only be viewed once. Those are two separate features.
Vanish mode on Messenger is gone
Older articles tell you to swipe up in a Messenger chat to start vanish mode. Meta's current page says vanish mode is no longer supported, and points to disappearing messages in end to end encrypted chats instead.
Instagram still has vanish mode, which is a common source of confusion because the two apps share an inbox for many people. Our guide covers how to turn off vanish mode on Instagram.
Facebook stories and screenshots
A Facebook story behaves like an Instagram story here. The owner sees a list of the people who viewed the story, and a screenshot adds nothing to that list. Facebook does not notify the poster, and there is no marker next to your name.
If you do not want to appear as a viewer at all, the only reliable way is not to open the story. Apps that claim to show anonymous story viewing, or to list who screenshotted a story, are selling something Facebook does not record. On Instagram, the same viewer list reaches into highlights for a limited time, as can people see if you view their highlights explains.
How other platforms compare
| Platform | Notifies for screenshots? | Where |
|---|---|---|
| No | Posts, stories, Reels, profiles. | |
| Messenger | Yes | End to end encrypted chats, when detected. |
| Yes | Only content sent to disappear in a chat: view once media, disappearing messages, vanish mode. | |
| TikTok | No | Views are counted, screenshots are not reported. Post view history lists some viewers instead. |
The pattern across all of them is the same. Content meant to disappear gets a screenshot notice. Content meant to stay does not.
The detail for Instagram is in our guide to whether Instagram notifies when you screenshot, and for TikTok in does TikTok show who viewed your video.
What a Page owner can and cannot see
Running a Facebook Page does not change any of this. Page insights count reach, engagement, link clicks and video views. They never name the users who saved or captured a post, and they do not report screenshots of photos or stories.
For a business the practical conclusion is the opposite of a privacy worry: anything you post can be saved, so post prices, claims and offers you are happy to see quoted back to you in a screenshot.
We do not plan content for Facebook, and our social media management page says so. Instagram posts can be mirrored to a connected Page, which is a different thing, and how to link Facebook to Instagram explains the two connections that make it work.
How we will test this
Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.
This is the test we will run: we use two of our own accounts and send each format between them: a post, a story, a Reel, a normal Messenger chat, an end to end encrypted chat and a disappearing message. We screenshot and screen record each one and write down what the other side sees.
Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next
Does Facebook notify screenshots?+
Not for posts, stories, Reels or profiles. Messenger notifies everyone in an end to end encrypted chat if Meta detects a screenshot or a screen recording.
Does Facebook notify when you screenshot a story?+
No. The person sees you in the list of story viewers, the same as anyone who watched, and nothing marks a screenshot.
Does Messenger notify screenshots of normal chats?+
Meta describes the notification for end to end encrypted chats only, and says nothing about a notice in other chats.
Does Messenger still have vanish mode?+
No. Vanish mode is no longer supported on Messenger; Meta points to disappearing messages inside end to end encrypted chats instead.
Will I be notified of every screenshot?+
No. Meta may not be able to detect all screen recordings or screenshots, so treat the notice as a deterrent.
Does Facebook notify when you screenshot a message photo?+
Media sent to be viewed once and messages in an end to end encrypted chat are the cases where a capture can be reported. A photo kept in a normal chat is not.
Can someone see if I screenshot their Facebook profile?+
No. Facebook does not record profile screenshots, and it has no profile view log.
How long do disappearing messages last on Messenger?+
Until the timer you chose runs out after the message is seen. Meta adds that a message not read within 14 days disappears automatically.
Can I report a message that already disappeared?+
Yes. A conversation with a message timer can be reported for up to 6 hours after the message disappears.
Do apps that show who screenshotted my Facebook posts work?+
No. Facebook does not record that, so there is nothing for an app to read. Anything that asks for your Facebook login should be closed.
