Short answer

To turn off vanish mode on Instagram, open the chat that is in vanish mode and swipe up from the bottom of the screen, then let go. The chat returns to normal, and everything that was sent in vanish mode disappears.

The steps on each device

Vanish mode belongs to one chat at a time. There is no master switch, so you turn it off inside the conversation where it is on.

The steps are the same on iPhone and Android:

  1. Open Instagram and tap Messages at the bottom.
  2. Tap the chat that is in vanish mode.
  3. Swipe up from the bottom of the chat and release. Vanish mode turns off and the normal chat comes back.

Vanish mode is not available on computers, so a chat in vanish mode is turned off from the Instagram app on a phone or a tablet.

If what you wanted was to change how a chat looks, that is a separate setting under the chat name, covered in how to change the chat theme in Instagram.

Content disappears when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off. That "someone" can be either of you, so you do not need the other person to end it.

What vanish mode is

Vanish mode lets two people send each other messages, photos, videos and other content that disappears from the chat. Instagram describes it this way: content sent in vanish mode disappears when someone leaves the chat or turns vanish mode off.

A few rules come with it, all from Instagram's Help Center:

  • It works only in a chat between two Instagram accounts. It does not work in group chats.
  • You cannot copy, save or forward messages sent in vanish mode.
  • Accounts you have not connected with before cannot send you message requests in vanish mode.
  • Certain professional accounts cannot receive messages in vanish mode.
  • It may be unavailable in Japan and in European countries.
  • If Instagram detects that the other person took a screenshot, you get a notification.

That last rule is covered in detail in our guide to whether Instagram notifies when you screenshot.

What happens to the messages when you turn it off

This is the part people do not expect. Turning off vanish mode does not keep the messages. It is one of the two things that erase them.

MessagesAfter you turn vanish mode offCan you get them back?
Sent before vanish mode was onStill in the chat, untouched.Nothing to recover.
Sent while vanish mode was onGone for both people.No. There is no archive, no recently deleted folder and no download that contains them.
Sent after you turn it offNormal messages that stay in the chat.Nothing to recover.

So if a vanish mode conversation contains something you need, such as an address, a price or a promise, copy the information down by hand before you swipe. Remember that a screenshot notifies the other person.

Why vanish mode turned on by itself

It almost never turns on by itself. It turns on by accident. The gesture is a swipe up inside a chat, which is also how people scroll to the newest message. One long swipe at the bottom of a conversation is enough.

There are two other common causes.

  • The other person turned it on. Either side can start vanish mode. When someone sends you a message in vanish mode, you get a notification, and tapping it opens the chat in vanish mode.
  • You tapped that notification. The chat opened in vanish mode because that is where the message was sent.

If it keeps happening in one chat, the simplest fix is a human one: tell the other person you would like to keep the conversation in the normal chat.

When the swipe does not work

Work through these in order. The first two solve most cases.

  1. Swipe from the very bottom, slowly, and hold before releasing. A short flick scrolls the chat instead.
  2. Check what the chat actually says. In many places Instagram now offers disappearing messages on a timer in place of vanish mode. It is switched on and off with the same swipe up, and its timer is changed under the message. If your chat mentions a timer, that is the feature you are in.
  3. Use the phone app. Vanish mode is not available on computers, so the web inbox cannot switch it.
  4. Update Instagram, then close and reopen the app.
  5. Leave the chat. Content sent in vanish mode disappears when someone leaves the chat, so going back to the inbox clears it even if the gesture misbehaves.

Can you disable vanish mode permanently?

No. Instagram's Help Center describes no account setting that switches vanish mode off for good, and none that stops another person from starting it in a chat with you. It is per chat, and it can always be switched back.

What you can control is who reaches you in the first place:

  • People you have never connected with cannot send you message requests in vanish mode at all.
  • You can restrict or block an account that keeps turning it on. Both options appear when you report a message.
  • For a child's account, the supervision tools in Instagram's Family Center are the place to look.

Vanish mode, disappearing messages and view once

Instagram has three features that make content disappear from a chat. They are easy to confuse, and they are turned off in different ways.

FeatureWhat disappearsWhenHow to turn it off
Vanish modeEverything sent while it is on.When someone leaves the chat or turns it off.Swipe up in the chat.
Disappearing messagesMessages sent while it is on. Some message types are not supported and stay. After the time set on the timer.Swipe up in the chat. The timer is changed under a message.
View once or allow replayOne photo or video sent from the camera in the chat. After it has been opened, or replayed once.Nothing to turn off. It is chosen per photo, and "keep in chat" sends a normal one.

All three notify the sender if Instagram detects a screenshot. None of them protects against a second phone pointed at the screen, which Instagram itself points out.

You can still report a message that vanished

People assume that a message sent in vanish mode is beyond reach once it is gone. It is not. Instagram says you can report a message or a chat sent in vanish mode for up to 14 days after the messages disappear, even though you can no longer see them.

  1. To report one message while it is still visible, tap and hold it, tap Report, choose the reason and submit.
  2. To report the chat, tap the username at the top, tap Options, then Report.

Reported vanish mode messages are decrypted and sent from your device to Instagram for review. The report is anonymous, and you are offered the option to restrict or block the account at the same step.

This matters most for parents and for anyone being harassed: vanish mode removes the messages from the chat, but not the ability to act on them, as long as you report within those 14 days.

Vanish mode and business accounts

Certain professional accounts cannot receive messages in vanish mode at all. If yours can, do not use it with customers.

A customer conversation is a record. It holds the order, the address, the agreed price and the complaint.

Vanish mode erases that record for both sides the moment either of you leaves the chat, and it blocks copying and forwarding while it is on. If a customer switches it on, turn it off and continue in the normal chat. More on handling a business inbox is in what DM means in social media, and on the privacy settings around it in how to hide your followers list.

How a brand handles its DMs is one of the eight areas we read in a social media audit.

How we will test this

Not run yetEverything above is taken from the platform's own help pages, and each claim says which page it came from. Our own test on live accounts has not been run, so nothing here is presented as something we measured.

This is the test we will run: we use two of our own accounts, one on iPhone and one on Android. We turn vanish mode on from each side, send text, a photo and a voice message, turn it off from the other side, and write down what each phone shows before and after.

Instagram changes this feature by region and over time, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter. This section will then say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next

What is vanish mode on Instagram?

A mode for a chat between two Instagram accounts in which messages, photos and videos disappear when someone leaves the chat or turns the mode off. Messages in it cannot be copied, saved or forwarded.

How do I turn on vanish mode?

The same way you turn it off. Open a chat in the Instagram app and swipe up from the bottom. It is only available in one to one chats, and Instagram says it may be unavailable in Japan and in European countries.

Does the other person know I turned vanish mode off?

The chat changes for both of you, so they will see that it is back to normal.

Do messages come back when I turn vanish mode off?

No. Turning it off is one of the two things that erase them. The other is leaving the chat. Messages sent before vanish mode was switched on are not affected.

Why does my Instagram keep going into vanish mode?

Usually because of the gesture. Swiping up at the bottom of a chat switches it on, and that is also how people scroll. The other common cause is opening a notification for a message that someone sent you in vanish mode.

Can I turn off vanish mode for all chats at once?

No. It is set per chat, and Instagram's Help Center describes no account wide switch. Open each chat that is in vanish mode and swipe up.

Can I turn off vanish mode on a computer?

No. Instagram lists the feature as unavailable on computers. Use the app on a phone or a tablet.

Why do I not have vanish mode at all?

Instagram says it may be unavailable in Japan and in European countries, and that certain professional accounts cannot receive vanish mode messages. In many places the chat offers disappearing messages on a timer instead, switched with the same swipe.

Does vanish mode notify about screenshots?

Yes. If Instagram detects that the other person took a screenshot of a message in vanish mode, you receive a notification. It cannot detect a photo taken with another device.

Can vanish mode messages be recovered?

Not by you. They are removed from the chat for both people. They can still be reported for up to 14 days after they disappear, and a reported message is sent to Instagram for review.

Is vanish mode safe?

It reduces what stays in a chat. It does not stop someone from capturing a message before it goes, and Instagram's own advice is to use it only with people you trust.
