What deactivating an Instagram account does
Instagram calls it temporarily deactivating your profile, and the wording explains why coming back is easy: your photos, comments and likes are hidden until you reactivate the profile by logging back in.
Nothing is erased. The account still exists with its posts, followers and messages; it is hidden from everyone else rather than removed.
| While deactivated | What happens |
|---|---|
| Your profile | Hidden. People who search for you or open a link do not find the account. |
| Your posts, comments and likes | Hidden until you log back in. |
| Your followers | Kept. They return with the account, because nothing was deleted. |
| Your username | Still attached to your account, because the account still exists. A username is released only when a deletion completes. |
How to deactivate an Instagram account
You can deactivate from a computer, a mobile browser or the Instagram app, as long as you can log in. The path runs through Accounts Center, and the labels vary slightly between app versions:
- Go to your profile and tap the menu in the top right.
- Tap Accounts Center.
- Open the account settings: Manage account, or Personal details and then Account ownership and control.
- Tap Deactivation or deletion.
- Choose the profile you want to deactivate.
- Tap Deactivate account, then Continue, and follow the instructions to confirm.
You will be asked why you are leaving and asked for your password. If you cannot log in, you cannot deactivate: for security reasons Instagram will not deactivate or delete a profile on your behalf.
How to reactivate an Instagram account
There is no reactivate button and nothing to send to support. Logging back in is the whole instruction:
- Open the Instagram app or instagram.com.
- Enter your username and password.
- Complete two factor authentication if you have it on.
If the login screen says the account does not exist, check two things: that you are typing the right username, and that you deactivated rather than deleted. A deleted account past its 30 day window is gone, and no login brings it back.
The once a week limit
You can deactivate your profile only once a week. People run into this when they use deactivation as a break button: deactivate on Monday, log back in on Tuesday, and the option is gone until the week is up.
If what you want is a quieter account rather than a hidden one, two settings do it without the limit:
- Go private. Only approved followers see your posts, and you keep using the app. Hiding your followers list on Instagram sets out what a private account hides and what it does not.
- Limit interactions or restrict accounts. If the problem is one person or a wave of comments, these are quicker and just as reversible.
A business account cannot be private at all; turning off a business account explains the switch that has to come first.
What deactivation does not hide
Hiding a profile is not the same as erasing a trail:
- Messages you sent. They were delivered to the other person's inbox, and deactivating your profile does not remove their copy.
- Screenshots and reposts. Anything someone saved stays saved. Instagram only tells people about screenshots in a few narrow cases, set out in does Instagram notify when you screenshot.
- Search engines. A cached copy of a public profile can linger for a while after the profile disappears.
- Your other profiles. Deactivation is per profile: in Accounts Center you choose which one, so a Facebook profile in the same Accounts Center stays as it is unless you pick it too. Disconnecting Facebook from Instagram covers the link between them.
Deactivating and deleting are different
Deletion runs on a clock that deactivation does not have. After you request it, there is a window to change your mind, then the removal itself:
| What | Deactivate | Delete |
|---|---|---|
| What happens | Photos, comments and likes hidden. | Profile, photos, videos, comments, likes and followers permanently removed. |
| Can it be undone? | Yes, by logging back in. | Only within the cancellation window. After 30 days everything is permanently deleted, and the window varies by region. |
| How long it takes | Immediate. | Up to 90 days to complete. |
| Username | Stays yours. | Free again once deletion completes, and reusable if nobody has taken it. |
| How often | Once a week. | Once, by definition. |
Export your information before deleting, because the export tool goes with the profile. If you are not sure which you want, deactivation is the reversible choice. And if the app itself is the problem, slow or full of old data, clearing the Instagram cache is a far smaller step.
What this means for a business account
Deactivating a business profile takes the shop window down. Customers who search for the brand find nothing, links from your website and Google Business Profile lead nowhere, and running ads lose their destination.
If the reason is a pause in the business, these serve better:
- Pin a post that explains the pause and says when you are back.
- Update the bio and the action buttons.
- Turn off ads, and keep answering messages once a day.
If the reason is that the account is not working, the free social media audit is a cheaper experiment than disappearing.
How we will test this
Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.
This is the test we will run: we deactivate one of our own test accounts and check, from a second account, what a visitor, a follower and an old chat see while it is hidden. Then we log back in and record how quickly the profile, posts and followers return.
Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next
If we deactivate Instagram, can it be reactivated?+
Yes. Your photos, comments and likes are hidden until you reactivate the profile by logging back in with your username and password.
How do I reactivate my Instagram account?+
Log in to the app or instagram.com with your username and password. There is no separate reactivate button.
How many times can I deactivate Instagram?+
Once a week.
Do I lose my followers when I deactivate?+
No. The account is hidden, not deleted, so followers and posts return with it.
Can people see my profile while it is deactivated?+
No. Your photos, comments and likes are hidden until you reactivate.
Does deactivating delete my messages?+
No. Messages you already sent stay in the other person's inbox. Deactivation hides your profile; it does not clean up conversations.
What is the difference between deactivating and deleting Instagram?+
Deactivation is temporary and reversible by logging in. Deletion removes everything, and 30 days after the request it cannot be undone.
Can I deactivate Instagram from the app?+
Yes. You can deactivate from a computer, a mobile browser or the Instagram app, through Accounts Center.
Can I keep my username while deactivated?+
Yes. The account still exists, so the username is not released. It is released only after a deletion completes.
Can Instagram deactivate my account for me?+
No. For security reasons Instagram will not delete or deactivate a profile for you, and you need to be able to log in.
Can an account be reactivated after a year?+
Instagram publishes no expiry for a deactivated account. What it does publish is the deletion side: 30 days after a deletion request the account cannot be brought back. Only deletion has a clock on it.
Does an Instagram account reactivate automatically?+
No. Reactivating means logging back in, which you have to do yourself. Deactivation is also limited to once a week, so an account cannot be switched off and on repeatedly.
