How to disconnect Facebook from Instagram.

There are two separate links between the apps, and most people only want to cut one of them. This is how to tell which one you have, and what each cut changes.

Short answer

Open Accounts Center, tap Accounts or Manage accounts, and tap Remove next to the Facebook account. Removing an account also removes any profiles associated with it. A Facebook Page connected to a professional Instagram account is a separate link, removed from Edit profile.

The two connections between Facebook and Instagram

"Disconnect Facebook from Instagram" can mean two different things, and they live in different menus. One links your personal accounts across Meta's apps. The other links a professional Instagram account to a Facebook Page, which is what a brand's ads and Business Suite run on.

ConnectionWhat it doesWhere to cut it
Accounts CenterLinks your personal accounts across Meta apps: shared login, cross posting, synced profile details and connected experiences.Accounts Center, Accounts, Remove.
A linked Facebook PageConnects a professional Instagram account to a Facebook Page, for Business Suite, ads and shopping.Edit profile on the professional account, or Business Suite.

Cutting one does not cut the other, and neither deletes anything you have posted. If you are not sure the accounts were ever joined, how to link Facebook to Instagram shows both connections from the other side.

How to remove the Facebook account from Accounts Center

The steps are the same on a phone, a tablet or a computer:

  1. Open Accounts Center. From Instagram: profile, the menu, then Accounts Center.
  2. Tap or click Accounts, or Manage accounts.
  3. Tap or click Remove next to the Facebook account.
  4. Confirm.

Two rules apply, and both catch people out:

  • Removing an account from an Accounts Center also removes any profiles associated with that account.
  • An Accounts Center holds only one Facebook account. To connect a different one, you remove the current one first.

There is also one special case: an Instagram AI account has to stay in the same Accounts Center as the Instagram account that created it, and removing one prompts you about deleting the other.

How to disconnect a Facebook Page from a professional account

This is the connection that matters for brands. It lets Meta Business Suite manage both accounts, it makes ads possible, and shopping features depend on it.

  1. Go to your profile and tap Edit profile.
  2. Scroll to Public business information on a business account, or Profile information on a creator account.
  3. Tap Page, then Disconnect Page.

The professional account is then no longer connected to that Page. To use a different Page, connect it from the same place.

There is a security side to this as well. While a Page is connected, anyone with access to the Page or to the Instagram account can manage both, so disconnecting is also how you take that shared access away.

What changes after you disconnect

WhatAfter removing from Accounts Center
Logging inYou sign into Instagram with its own username and password again, not through Facebook.
Cross postingInstagram posts and stories no longer go automatically to the Facebook profile or Page that was connected.
Profile detailsChanges to your name or picture no longer sync between accounts.
Your postsUnchanged on both sides. Anything already shared to Facebook stays there.
Account switchingYou can no longer move between the apps without logging in.

The one thing to do before you remove it: make sure you know the Instagram password and that the account has a working email or phone number. If you only ever logged in through Facebook, set a password first, or you can lock yourself out.

What you give up

Disconnecting is easy to undo, but while it lasts it costs a professional account these:

  • Business Suite and ads. Without a linked Page there is no route into Meta Business Suite or Meta Ads Manager.
  • Scheduling from a computer. That runs through Business Suite. Scheduling inside the app still works, as set out in how to schedule Instagram posts.
  • Shopping features, where they depend on the Page and the catalog.
  • One inbox. Messages from the two apps stop arriving in the same place.

If the reason is privacy rather than business, removing the account from Accounts Center is usually enough. It stops the personal linking and leaves the Page connection a brand needs where it is. For privacy inside Instagram itself, hiding your followers list and a private account go further.

If this is a business account

For a brand, disconnecting the Page is rarely the right fix. The usual reasons have better answers:

The reasonA better fix
Instagram posts keep appearing on FacebookTurn off cross posting in the account's sharing settings, or per post when you share. With a Page linked, sharing goes to that Page only.
The wrong Facebook account is attachedRemove that one from Accounts Center, then add the right one. Only one Facebook account fits.
A former employee still has accessChange roles in Business Suite and on the Page, rather than cutting the Page connection.
Facebook takes more effort than it returnsKeep the Page connected for the tools, and stop publishing to it.

If you are going further and leaving the business tools altogether, turning off a business account explains what that removes. And how the two apps are connected is one of the things we check in a free social media audit, because a broken link quietly stops ads and shopping from working.

How we will test this

Not run yetEverything above comes from the published sources listed below, and nothing here is presented as something we measured. Our own test on live accounts has not been run yet.

This is the test we will run: we remove a Facebook account from the Accounts Center of one of our test accounts and record what changes on both sides: login, cross posting, the shared inbox and Business Suite access. Then we reconnect and note what has to be set up again.

Platforms change behavior without announcing it, so once the first test is run we repeat it every quarter, and this section will say when it was run and on which devices and app versions.

Questions people ask next

How do I disconnect Facebook from Instagram?

Open Accounts Center, tap Accounts or Manage accounts, then Remove next to the Facebook account, and confirm.

Does disconnecting delete my posts?

No. Posts stay on both apps. Anything already shared to Facebook remains there.

Will I still be able to log in to Instagram?

Yes, with your Instagram username and password. If you always logged in through Facebook, set an Instagram password before you disconnect.

What happens to profiles linked to that account?

When you remove an account from an Accounts Center, any profiles associated with that account are removed as well.

Can I have two Facebook accounts in one Accounts Center?

No. Only one Facebook account can be added. To use a different one, remove the current account first.

Does this stop Instagram posts appearing on Facebook?

Removing the connection stops automatic cross posting. You can also turn cross posting off per post, or in the account's sharing settings, without disconnecting.

Is disconnecting the Page the same thing?

No. A Page linked to a professional account is a separate connection, used by Business Suite, ads and shopping. Disconnect it with Edit profile, Page, Disconnect Page.

Will I lose Instagram Insights?

Insights belong to the Instagram account, not to the Facebook link. A public account keeps them. Business Suite access is what depends on the Page.

Can I reconnect later?

Yes. Add the account again in Accounts Center. Connected experiences have to be set up again.

Does disconnecting stop Meta using my data?

No. Disconnecting stops the accounts being linked for shared login and cross posting. What Meta collects is set by its privacy policy and your privacy settings.
